West Cape May Information
About West Cape May
What once was a dry state prohibiting the sale of alcohol for over 70 years, West Cape May is a small town on Cape Island with a population of just over 1,000. With a long history of agricultural ties, West Cape May is the “Lima Bean Capital of the World”. The town was also the hardest hit in the state during Hurricane Sandy when it got 9.53 inches of rain. West Cape May is actually a borough in Cape May County, and the core of it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Things to do in West Cape May
The borough is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, so why not walk around and find out why? Stroll through the town and check out the Victorian architecture along the town’s main roads and side streets, or drive to the original county courthouse. Then, head to Dennis Creek, where the cedar was mined and the shingles were made for the roof of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Finally, catch a glimpse of Whildin-Miller House, one of the oldest remaining houses in Cape Island. Although you can’t tour the inside, the outside is just as rich with architectural history. The weather doesn’t always play nice during vacation, so if you find yourself with a rainy day, head to the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. Here, you can sit inside the cockpit of an aircraft, climb a real traffic control tower, and explore the Coast Guard exhibit area. In addition, check out the Science of Flight interactive exhibit and try flying a place of your own (through a flight simulator, of course). This museum has a good balance of hands-on and visual exhibits, so you’d have plenty to see and do if you spent the day here. If the weather does play nice, you’ll have a vast selection of activities to choose from in West Cape May. Go on the original whale and dolphin watching cruise line in New Jersey, the Cape May Whale Watcher, and try to sight some marine mammals. If you’re up for an adventure, take a ride in the sky and go parasailing with East Coast Parasail, a trusted company that has a 100% safety record. They also rent out jet skis and boats if you’re interested.
