Avalon Information
About Avalon
Avalon, California is the largest city on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California and has a Mediterranean feel that will make you feel very removed from city life. The island is accessed via ferry departing from the Long Beach or Newport Beach areas, or by plane. It is a beautiful and easy retreat from the crowded Los Angeles metro area, and is a fantastic destination for anyone that loves water sports or hiking.
Things to do in Avalon
Avalon may be located on a small island, but there are many things to do when visiting. One of the most popular options in Avalon is to visit the famous Catalina Island Casino. It’s been a focal point on the island for entertainment since it opened in 1929. The casino offers great entertainment, with live shows, a museum on the first floor, and stunning views from its perch above the Avalon Bay. To relax, check out Descanso Beach, the best in Avalon and one of the most popular beaches on the island for bathing in the sun. The Descanso Beach Club is located on the beach and has a restaurant that will deliver drinks and food to you on the beach. Additionally, you can rent towels, chairs and umbrellas. From the beach club, you can head to the Catalina Zipline Eco Tour, which has five different zip lines that propel you at speeds up to 30 miles per hour starting in the high in the hills near Avalon and descending through Descanso Canyon. Another fun place to go is the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden, dedicated to William Wrigley Jr., the founder of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company renowned for its chewing gum. He was a long time benefactor of the island, and the beautiful botanical garden features plants that are native to California islands, especially species only found on Catalina Island. If you’re interesting in golfing, Avalon is home to the beautiful Catalina Island Golf Course, the oldest operating golf course west of the Rocky Mountains, which opened in 1892. This scenic, 2,100-yard course has nine challenging holes and two sets of tees for 18-hole play. While you’re in Avalon, get out on the water by taking a boat tour or a fishing charter with companies like Catalina Expeditions Tours and Afishinados Charters for an exciting day on the water.
Day trips from Avalon
There aren’t too many day trip opportunities from Avalon, given its location on secluded Catalina Island. You can spend an entire day on the hiking trails, go snorkeling, or sail around the island. If you want to get to the mainland and visit a city area, you can take the 1.5-hour ferry to Dana Point or Newport Beach and then drive to San Diego, which would total about a 2.5-3 hour trip. San Diego has Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and a Wild Animal park, while the fun downtown area has great shopping and restaurants. San Diego is a great golfing destination, so bring your clubs with you and you could checkout Torrey Pines or Colina Park Golf Course.
