Conway Information
About Conway
Conway is a rural town in Emmet County, Michigan. The town is known for its lush natural scenery, with Crooked Lake and Round Lake on either side, as well as the nearby Petoskey State Park overlooking Lake Michigan. Conway is located in a sparsely populated area in the north of Michigan’s lower peninsula, making it an ideal spot for a quiet vacation. Activities in northern Michigan vary by season, but the wooded environment on the Great Lakes provides something to do for any and all vacationers. Both locals and tourists can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter, hunting Petoskey stones among the sand dunes on Lake Michigan in the summer, and taking in the colors of autumn with a fall colors drive along the coastline.
Things to do in Conway
Your first stop in Conway might be Fochtman Nature Preserve, a trail system and natural environment with wildlife and picturesque views. Within walking distance of Fochtman, you can find the Hailand Nature Preserve, featuring local waterfowl within a quarter-mile wetland trail. Hunting is allowed within Fochtman, but be sure to read up on local legislation beforehand. Bordering Conway to the east is Crooked Lake, part of the Inland Waterway, which stretches all the way to Lake Huron on the eastern coast of Michigan through rivers and lakes. The lake is a popular fishing destination; try ice fishing on a winter vacation to Conway. Head to Little Traverse Bay for a sailing adventure on Lake Michigan. The second largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is a popular sailing destination, well-loved for its variety of ports in four different states. Traverse City is the nearest sailing port for Conway visitors, but you’ll find sailors in many of the small beach towns along the northern coast of Michigan’s lower peninsula.
Day trips from Conway
During your stay in northern Michigan, you’d be remiss to skip the 40-minute drive (plus a ferry ride) to Mackinac Island – a vacation spot that many Michiganders hold more reverent than Disney World. Make lifelong memories riding horses, eating Mackinac Island Fudge and taking in the old-world vibes of this special island. A preserved National Historic Landmark, Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) bans cars on the island to keep horses calm – which lends itself to a tranquil and old-fashioned experience. If you’re looking for a pleasant beachside town with events and parks for all ages, Petoskey offers a great day trip experience only six miles outside of Conway. Voted one of the 20 best small towns to visit by Smithsonian magazine, Petoskey was a favorite vacation spot for Ernest Hemingway’s family as well as novelist Anne Patchett’s tranquil getaway – and it’s no surprise why! From the Gaslight Shopping District downtown to the beautiful beaches and the eponymous fossilized Petoskey stones, Petoskey is surely something to write about. Check out the local bookstore, McLean and Eakin, to feel right at home.

Transportation in Conway
The municipal airport in Harbor Springs is just a quick drive from Conway, but wider travel options are available at the Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City (and the scenic 70-mile drive from Traverse City to Conway is filled with sightseeing delights!). For daily transit, bring a vehicle or rent a car at Cherry Capital Airport; public transportation is limited in rural northern Michigan. But bring a bike, if possible – the Little Traverse Wheelway runs along the Little Traverse Bay from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs (passing through Conway near the latter). Take a sunset ride along the shoreline for great views and exercise!
