From Mackinac, you can take plenty of day trips. For some fun sightseeing and enjoying nature, travel south to the Upper Peninsula. There, you can catch the sight of two waterfalls, visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum, where you can learn more about Lake Superior and the lives of sailors. 40 minutes away from the island is the Garlyn Zoo, where you can take the kids and view a variety of different North American animals. An hour drive north will have you in Sault Sainte Marie, home of the largest waterway traffic system in the world. Transportation around Mackinac Island
Although motor vehicles aren’t allowed on the island, there are still many different ways to get around. There are over 1,400 bikes to rent on the island, so be sure to check out some of the rental places around town (including Fat Tire Bikes).
