Things to Do in Mackinaw City
When you first get here, (if you didn’t come from the North) pay the toll and drive across the Mackinac Bridge. The view is breathtaking! Next, there is so much history here and historic sites to see. Check out Fort Michilimackinac State Park, a reconstructed 1715 French fur trading village and military outpost. The McGulpin Point Lighthouse is quite fascinating to see and very well maintained. The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse is another must-see historical landmark, along with the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park. At night, be sure to look up to see all of the stars and if you’re lucky you might just be there when the Northern Lights decide to put on a show. Day Trips from Mackinaw City
The first day trip you must take is one to Mackinac Island! Get on a ferry and be transported back in time to an era before the invention of the car. You can ride bicycles, walk or take a carriage, but there is no driving here! Eat the fudge and check out the different shops. If you plan accordingly and you’re on the island in July then you might just get to see one of the two annual sailboat races to Mackinac Island. Next head south (one hour drive) to Harbor Springs or Petoskey. The two cities are fifteen minutes apart so you can definitely see both in a day. Both offer great shopping! The Mackinaw Trail Winery in Petoskey has a stellar wine tour and is one of the friendliest wineries! You can head even farther south to Traverse City, which is a phenomenal lake resort community. There are all kinds of shops and restaurants to be discovered here! You can easily spend a day just walking around looking at everything. The drive is about two hours from Mackinaw City, so plan your day accordingly.

Transportation in Mackinaw City
The best way to get to Mackinaw City depends on where you’re coming from. Driving is by far one of the easiest ways to get here. The added bonus is that you can then venture outside of Mackinaw City for a day trip or two. However, if driving directly to Mackinaw City is not a viable option then you can fly. Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) is the closest to Mackinaw City, but you can also fly into Traverse City at Cherry Capital Airport (TVC). Either way, you will probably need to then a rent a car to actually get to Mackinaw City. There is, of course, one more option! You can come by boat! If you have a boat or wish to rent a boat, then Mackinaw City makes for a perfect destination.
