Things to do in Boyne City
It’s never too early to start planning for next year’s 4th of July. Boyne City was featured in USA Today’s 2016 Best Small Town Independence Day Celebrations. The town’s Commemorative Raft Race, where participants race down the Boyne River and onlookers toss water balloons, throw buckets of water, and spray water guns, is arguably the biggest event of the holiday. The duck race may come in at a close second, where rubber ducks (almost 1,000 of them) are thrown into the river and prizes are awarded for the first few ducks to cross the finish line. Talk about a unique and eventful celebration of our nation’s freedom! If you’re not coming to Boyne City in time for its 4th of July celebration, don’t worry, there’s still plenty to do. The 13th Annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run, a boating event that showcases boats on the waters of Lake Michigan and Charlevoix but also includes five different harbor stops for poker rounds, takes place July 8th and 9th. Irish Heritage Week takes place in March and celebrates Boyne City’s Irish roots with traditional Irish dinner, storytelling, and dancing. The National Morel Mushroom Festival has been hosted in Boyne City every May for the past 55 years. If you’re a mushroom lover, you won’t want to miss this!
