Bainbridge Island Information

About Bainbridge Island

Located in the Puget Sound Basin and just west of Seattle, Bainbridge Island is the perfect place for your next vacation. The island’s shores run along the Puget Sound, Port Orchard Bay, and two other tidal passages. The island is just 65.02 square miles, over half of which is comprised of water. This unique geography gives Bainbridge Island character not often seen among places in the U.S. With the Olympic Mountains to the west of the island, and Mount Rainier to the east, Bainbridge Island gives visitors a place to enjoy the views without ever having to leave the island. The town center, known as Winslow, only adds to the island’s charm.

Things to do in Bainbridge Island

For a state known for its natural beauty, it’s no surprise that Bainbridge Island houses some beautiful public spaces. The Bloedel Reserve, a forest garden with both traditional Japanese and Zen gardens, is the ideal place to go on a walk or sit and have a picnic. The Manor House at the Bloedel Reserve now serves as a visitor center, so be sure to check that out while you’re at the garden. Fort Ward Park is another fun place to go for a walk along the shoreline or take a stroll on the hiking trails and explore the historic army bunker areas. You can also take a bike ride with (or without) the family to the fort area. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting Bainbridge Island on a Friday, be sure to stop by the First Friday Art Walk. On the first Friday of every month, businesses in downtown Winslow open their doors from 6-8pm for visitors to take a look at some unique art and crafts.

Day Trips from Bainbridge Island

With Seattle just a 35-minute ferry ride away, it’s no wonder so many travelers and locals enjoy Bainbridge Island. For a day trip, start at the ferry landing on Bainbridge Island and shoot across Elliott Bay. The view of Seattle’s skyline will greet you upon arrival at Pier 52. From there, you can take a cab to any part of the city. The famous Pike Place Market is about a 13-minute walk from the ferry landing. At the market, you can find fresh produce, fish caught daily, and shops selling just about everything from souvenirs to homemade jellies. While in Seattle, a quick 3-minute cab ride will take you from Pike Place Market to Olympic Sculpture Park. Here you can walk the grounds (free of charge) and explore the permanent and temporary art installations. After strolling around the park, rent a bike from Dutch Bike Co. ($30 for 3 hours) and ride to Capitol Hill where locals consider a hip place to hang out. Stop by Volunteer Park and climb up the Water Tower for a great view of Seattle’s waterfront before catching the ferry back to Bainbridge Island.

Transportation in Bainbridge Island

Biking and walking are a great way to get around the island. If you want to explore the entire island, a car is recommended, though pubic transit is also an option. Buses operate through Kitsap Transit and many lines run throughout the island. You can definitely get by without a car on Bainbridge, but if you have limited time then a car might be the more efficient way to go. To get to the island from out of state or country, fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and take the train (LINK, located in the airport) to Pioneer Square Station. From there, it’s about an 8-minute walk to the ferry terminal where you can catch a ride to the island.

Bainbridge Island Accommodations

Tripping.com provides listings for over 60 rentals on Bainbridge Island itself, and nearly 3,000 rentals in the Seattle metro area. For rentals on Bainbridge Island, choose from family friendly cottages with exquisite sunset views over the water or a cabin in the woods with a hot tub for a friends’ getaway. If you need a place close enough to the ferry that you can walk to it, Tripping.com has those, too. From restaurants to unique coffee shops, Bainbridge Island’s charm extends beyond its proximity to Seattle and the natural beauty surrounding it. Storyville Coffee Company is a local favorite. The café doubles as a roasting studio, so when you walk in you get to smell the latest batch of beans being roasted. For a meal and a great view of Elliott Bay, head to The Harbour Public House. Enjoying a bowl of their clam chowder outside on their marina-facing deck will make you want to stay in Bainbridge Island long after your vacation is over.
