One of the most popular places to visit in Olympia is the Washington State Capitol Building, which was built in 1928 and stands at an impressive 287-feet high. Don’t forget to go inside this stunning building, which includes a beautifully designed interior that includes a Tiffany chandelier that weighs five tons. Many people come to the Olympia Farmers Market, which is located along Olympia’s Percival Landing and features various stalls selling everything from handcrafted cheeses to fresh berries. The Washington State Capital Museum is situated in the Lord Mansion, and houses a number of displays related to the city as well as Native American history. Another recommended place to visit is the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to more than 200 migratory birds that visit annually and use the area for nesting and habitat. The Hands On Children’s Museum is a great place to bring the little ones who can play around with different exhibits and programs on art and science, while East Bay Public Plaza is a vibrant public space that features various elements and displays that feature more than 150 hands-on exhibits spread out over two floors and their Outdoor Discovery Center. Highlights include a treehouse, an arts and parts studio where kids can build from a huge assortment of supplies, a 25-foot Airways Maze, and an interactive Farmers Market for kids.

Day Trips Near Olympia

One popular day trip near Olympia is Mount Rainier National Park, which has become a destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are also many sightseeing opportunities that includes scenic drives and various lookout points, waterfalls, and historic buildings along the way. The park is approximately 65 miles southeast of Olympia and takes an hour and a half by car. Another great nearby daytrip is the University of Puget Sound, which is a little over thirty minutes away by car and is the only national, independent undergraduate liberal arts college in Western Washington.
