Things to do in Bryson City

Deep Creek Tube Center Mining Camp might be the best place to start your vacation. For the kids, this place sells bags of mine dirt enriched with gemstones from around the world. Take that dirt and place it on a screen-bottom box, dip the box in a wash tub, and watch as the gems appear and the dirt washes away! Once you’ve found the gems you’re looking for, rent tubes from the same center and bring it to the Deep Creek trailhead. Hop in the tub and float along the one-mile stretch of Deep Creek inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are even waterfalls to check out, so make sure you get your $5 tube rental for the day and enjoy some sunshine and natural scenery. Speaking of the Great Smoky Mountains, you’ll be overwhelmed by their beauty when you visit Bryson City. Take a day to explore the countless hiking trails within this National Park. For a moderate, but long, hike, try Martin’s Gap Loop. Nolan Creek Trail is an easy out and back, 6-mile trail with a gentle grade. You can even hike through some of the Appalachian Trail. One of the more popular section of it in Bryson City is from Newfound Gap to Charlie’s Bunion, an 8-mile round-trip trek that will give you a taste of what hikers who complete the whole Appalachian Trail experience! A variety of other outdoor activities are within reach in Bryson City. Nantahala Outdoor Center is the place to go in Bryson City, and it was rated “One of the Best Outfitters on Earth” by National Geographic Adventure. With Nantahala Outdoor Center, you can book 2-mile-long zip line tours that soar high above the Nantahala River Gorge and through parts of the Smoky Mountains. You can also hop on a stand-up paddleboard and cruise down the Tuckasegee River or on nearby Fontana Lake. There are also a handful of horseback riding options, including some guided trips through the Nantahala National Forest. Don’t forget about the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad where you can take one of USA Today’s “Top 10 American Train Rides” through some gorgeous natural scenery. There’s even a first class, adults-only moonshine car where you can enjoy a beverage or two while making the 4-hour excursion. This isn’t a train ride you want to miss!

Day Trips from Bryson City

Just a little over an hour east of Bryson City is where you’ll find Asheville, the city with the most breweries per capita in the entire U.S. It’s no wonder it earned the nickname Beer City in 2009. Make a day trip to Asheville and discover more craft breweries than you can count. Wicked Weed Brewing Pub offers visitors an array of beers, from light to dark and everything in between, and serves up some tasty, locally-sourced American food. Highland Brewing Company provides free tours of its brewing facilities and often brings in food trucks to satisfy the beer-drinker’s hunger. They also have a rooftop deck! End the day at Twin Leaf Brewery where you can sample beers like their Piña Colada IPA and enjoy their weekly trivia or Blues music night. Asheville is definitely worth the trip!

Transportation in Bryson City

If you’re coming from out of the area, your best bet is to get a flight into Asheville or Knoxville, Tennessee. From McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, you’ll need to rent a car and drive the 2 hour and 10-minute drive to Bryson City. From Asheville, the drive is about an hour shorter, but the flight is about $100 more expensive. While in Bryson City, many attractions in town can be visited via walking, but a rental car will be necessary if you want to explore other areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or surrounding areas.
