Things to do in Highlands
There are a variety of fun activities you can take part in while you’re in Highlands. Adventurers can make their own path out in the beautiful eco treks that surround the area, or explore the Nature Center and Highlands Greenway for a fun hike. There are also a good amount of national forests in the area, including the Nantahala National Forest, where you can enjoy beautiful waterfalls, rivers and lakes. You can also try your hand at zip lining through the trees at Highlands Aerial Park, or go fishing in the Cullasaja River. If you want to go on a fun shopping excursion, Highlands’ downtown district features a nice mix of ‘hip and high-end’ boutiques for you to stroll through. When it’s time to eat, stop for a bite at one of the delicious farm-to-table restaurants in the area including Dog House, El Manzanillo and Altitudes Restaurant. For entertainment, you can check out a show at the Highlands Playhouse, or enjoy live music at places like Kelsey-Hutchinson Park when the weather gets warm.
Highlands Day Trips
While Highlands may be fun, there are plenty of other day trips around the area you can take that will be just as exciting. Lake Glenville is a good 14 miles away, and is a great place to go for a fun camping trip with the family or for a picnic by the water. Fishers may want to head out to Jackson County and try their hand at catching some trout. A shorter 10 miles away from town is Cashiers, a small town in the southwestern corner of North Carolina that is perfect for a quick get away from city life. There are also a variety of waterfalls that you can visit nearby, including Rainbow Falls and Tallulah Gorge Falls.
