Maggie Valley Information

About Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley is a town in Haywood County, North Carolina, home to the Great Smoky Mountains and a wonderful destination for a mountain vacation. Less than 1,000 people make Maggie Valley their home, meaning the village has a quaint, small-town feel and plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds it.

Things to do in Maggie Valley

When you go to Maggie Valley, your first priority should be to enjoy the scenery. If it’s winter, that most likely means heading to Cataloochee Ski Area, the Southeast’s longest operating ski resort. The mountain offers easy, medium, and difficult slopes, as well as lessons and a terrain park. If you’re visiting in the warmer months, hike Purchase Knob; drive or bike along Blue RIdge Parkway, America’s longest linear park; and visit Soco Falls, a beautiful waterfall just a short walk off the main road. Or, if you’re feeling even more adventurous, sign up for a horseback ride at Cataloochee Ranch. When you want to unwind, visit the Maggie Valley Opry House, which showcases bluegrass and mountain music, or the Maggie Valley Stompin’ Ground, a dance hall with live music. Also make sure to pay a visit to Wheels Through Time, a transportation museum.

Day trips from Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley is right next to the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, making day trips within either state doable. Asheville, North Carolina, is the closest big city at around 40 minutes away and a great destination for a trip. Also a mountain city, Asheville is known for its vibrant arts scene and breathtaking architecture. While you’re there, make sure to visit Biltmore, George W. Vanderbilt’s winter home. Or, head west to Tennessee. While Nashville is a bit of a long trek for a day trip, Knoxville is only 1.5 hours away. While there, eat and shop at Market Square, see a performance at the Tennessee Theatre, and walk around World’s Fair Park. For a very unique experience, take a half-day rail trip on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad to see lush valleys, rolling fields, and idyllic rivers.

Maggie Valley accommodations

Maggie Valley is centered around Soco Road, the main street that twists through the middle of town. The vast majority of restaurants, shops, and grocery stores are right off Soco Road, so the closer you are to it, the closer you’ll be to those amenities. However, if you’re looking to truly get away, find rentals that are farther into the mountains.

Transportation in Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley is served by Haywood Public Transit. Instead of regular routes that buses serve, Haywood Public Transit is made up of different sized shuttles that must be scheduled at least one day ahead of time and paid for depending on the ride length. It’s also only available on weekdays. Though it is much more convenient to have your own car, if you don’t want to drive to Asheville but want to spend a day there, Haywood Public Transit offers service there.
