About Murphy

Located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Murphy, North Carolina, is an old town with roots dating back to the 1800s. Tree-lined streets and historic buildings decorate this picturesque small town, with its population of under 2,000. Despite its modest size, the town abounds with recreational activities, unique shops, restaurants and other noteworthy establishments to explore. In addition, it’s proximity to the capital cities of six other states makes Murphy an ideal starting or end point from which to launch cross-city travels.

Things to do in Murphy

Murphy is full of history just waiting to be explored. The town has the smallest railroad in the country, with just a short spur of tracks, a boxcar and a caboose. But that wasn’t always so. The L & N Depot in Murphy, used to be a grand station until the late 1900s, but two railroads at a crossroads led to the last train departing town the summer of 1992. Learn the full story and the town’s plan to restore the train cars at the site of the original depot. The Murphy Pyramid also comes with a tale: one of a great traveler who contributed to the success of the town. See what roles ARS hunter and his niece Hitchcock Coit had in Murphy, and the legend that locals tell of their burial. Koneheta Park is a lovely stop in Murphy, with its river walk, sports fields, pool and gym complex. A choice destination for outdoor recreation, Koneheta also has a kiddie park and a picnic area as well. The park is home to Murphy River Walk, which follows the Hiwassee River and Valley River for about three miles. Along the walkway, hikers will find picnic areas with grills, a fishing pier and swings under the trees. Downtown Murphy also has an array of shops, art galleries and restaurants to explore. The historic town brings back “old-fashioned” in the best way possible: from comfort fare and drinks, to the laid-back, welcoming atmosphere.
