South Beach Information
About South Beach
The neighborhood of South Beach is nestled directly east from the city proper of Miami, Florida, and it borders the Atlantic Ocean and lagoon called Biscayne Bay. Nicknamed SoBe, the oceanfront neighborhood wasn’t always the tourist destination it is today. SoBe originated as farmland until it was developed by entrepreneurs into a beach town during the early 1900s. After experiencing an architectural revolution and serving as a backdrop for a couple of successful television shows like The Jackie Gleason Show and Miami Vice, SoBe transformed into its current state as a popular and trendy entertainment hotspot attracting visitors from around the country and world.
Things to do in South Beach
In the spirit of SoBe’s dynamic atmosphere, the neighborhood hosts plenty of events throughout the year. In January, the Miami Marathon takes place. The Miami International Film Festival as well as Miami Fashion Week occur during March. The last weekend in May sees Urban Beach Week, a hip-hop music-centric celebration filled with live performances and parties. During the winter in December, SoBe holds Art Basel Miami, the renowned international art fair and exhibition. Accordingly, SoBe boasts an energetic nightlife. The top clubs include Mango’s Tropical Café, famous for its Latin music and also has a restaurant; Club Space, a cavernous dance hall situated in an immense warehouse space; and STORY, a brightly-lit nightclub featuring live DJs and bottle service. As for family-friendly attractions, SoBe is home to the Miami City Ballet, Jewish Museum of Florida, and Bass Museum, a contemporary art museum. Lincoln Road, an outdoor shopping center, offers a pedestrian-friendly road lined with an abundance of shops, eateries, and galleries.
Day trips from South Beach
The Biscayne National Park is located about two hour’s worth of driving southward from SoBe. Water comprises the majority of the park due to Biscayne Bay. Known for its breathtaking barrier reefs and mangrove forest, Biscayne National Park is a nature lover’s dream. Around a dozen endangered species such as hawksbill sea turtles and manatees can be seen at the park. For those willing to drive the extra distance, from SoBe, Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando are reachable with approximately a four hour’s drive northward.
South Beach accommodations
Luxury and incredible ocean views are no strangers to SoBe properties. From lavish, modern villas and penthouses overlooking the beach to Downtown apartments and spacious lofts, there is a comfortable vacation rental to fit almost any lifestyle and preference.
Transportation in South Beach
The beachfront neighborhood and surrounding areas in Miami are famed for being bicycle and pedestrian-friendly. It’s feasible to navigate in and around South Beach without using a car. Although there isn’t a direct Metrorail station in SoBe, a few of the Metrobus routes that are managed by the Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) connect to Downtown Miami. The most frequented line is called the “South Beach Local” (SBL). To travel to and from the Miami International Airport, visitors can take the MDT’s Airport-Beach Express bus, also known as Route 150, which operates as a direct-service line that stops at several prominent SoBe points.
