About Ontario
Located in San Bernardino County, 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Ontario is positioned perfectly for those looking to get a taste of everything Southern California has to offer. The city is situated directly off of Interstate 10, a main artery in Los Angeles. For visitors, this means easy access to many locations outside of Ontario, including Santa Monica, Hollywood, and even Anaheim (where Disneyland resides!). So pack your bags and get ready to explore one of the most visited places in the world.
Things to do in Ontario
While Ontario has some of its own attractions, it is certainly a convenient place to stop and rest before a flight out. While in the LA area, head over to The Getty Center. With free admission, and a mere $15 to park, the center’s museum is a hidden gem in Los Angeles. The center is located just off the 405 freeway in Pacific Palisades, but a tram will take you from the parking lot up to the top of the mountain where the museum sits. The center offers an incredible view of the Los Angeles area, not to mention ever-changing exhibits, American and European architecture, and beautiful grounds. This is a great place to spend a day like a local. The weather in LA is known for being near-perfect every day. This makes for hundreds of beach-worthy days every year. Head over to Venice Beach and walk the boardwalk for a unique experience. Street vendors and storefront cater to tourists, offering everything from sunglasses to artwork to ice cream. You’ll want to go watch skaters dip into the Venice Skate Park, which is situated on the beach with a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean in the background. For another spectacle, walk along the boardwalk until you reach Muscle Beach Venice, an iconic landmark in the LA area. This outdoor weightlifting gym butts up to the boardwalk, so you’ll get a chance to see both young and old weightlifters working out at the famous gym built in 1952.
Day Trips from Ontario
Just an hour and a half southeast of Ontario lies a town with a distinctly different feel from Los Angeles. Idyllwild is home to some of the best rock climbing locations around, as well as a bustling art scene. The town also became a prime filming location during the 20th century, with over 20 feature films shot there in the 1920s alone. The town hosts an annual Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema, which draws in a large crowd every January. The main street is lined with art galleries and cozy places to stop for a bite to eat. For a nice getaway within driving distance of Ontario, Idyllwild is the place to go. For the ultimate family-friendly day trip that will have your kids thanking you long after, take a 45-minute drive into Anaheim. There, you will enter the magical world of Disney. Disneyland and California Adventure are just a hop away from each other, and there is something for everyone between the two. Buy a park-hopper pass and go to both parks in the same day, but don’t forget to watch the nightly fireworks show that takes place behind Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.
Transportation in Ontario
Downtown Ontario is located just 2 miles from Ontario International Airport. Fly into and out of here for the most efficient trip. Once you’ve settled in, getting around Ontario and the greater LA area is best done by car. Although public transportation does operate throughout some parts of the area, most places are only reached by car, like The Getty Center. A bus system runs throughout Venice and Santa Monica, so the option is there for a trip to the beach. Otherwise, a car is your best bet.
