Mariposa Information
About Mariposa
Located in the foothills of the famous Sierra Nevada, a mountain range spanning some 400 miles north-to-south, Mariposa is a small town of just under 3,000. In 1849, when gold was first discovered in the area, U.S. General and presidential candidate John C. Fremont purchased 70 square miles of land and established his Mariposa gold estate. From there, the Mariposa area expanded into a gold mining boomtown. In fact, Mariposa was the county seat in the 1800s and was considered the Mother of California Counties because of the amount of land the county once covered. Today, the town’s roots can be seen up and down its main artery, Highway 140, in the architecture of old hardware storefronts and wooden restaurants complete with lanterns and a gold-mining-campsite feel. The town is in close proximity to some of the 4th most visited National Park, according to National Geographic, Yosemite.
