About Sonora

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada region, the charming city of Sonora serves as Tuolumne County’s county seat. The city was founded during the California Gold Rush by Mexican miners. Historically, the area’s economy was reliant on mining and timber. Presently, the city’s primary industry is tourism since it is in proximity to Yosemite National Park. During the winter, Sonora experiences a lot of precipitation. On the other hand, the climate in the summer is mostly hot and dry.

Day trips from Sonora

Yosemite National Park is situated eastward from Sonora with about an hour and half’s worth of driving. Famous for its gorgeous waterfalls, glaciers, giant sequoia trees, lakes, mountains, and granite cliffs, this official World Heritage Site is popular for its campgrounds as well as recreational activities. Things to do at Yosemite include rock climbing, photography and nature walks, rafting, stargazing, horseback riding, and biking. During the winter, sports like cross-country and downhill skiing are available. The area of Groveland is accessible from Sonora with about a half an hour’s drive in a southeast direction.
