Twain Harte Information
About Twain Harte
A getaway location for many Central Valley families in California, Twain Harte was named after two famous authors who lived in the state: Bret Harte and Mark Twain. The Mi-Wuk Indians used to reside in present-day Twain Harte and nearby towns of Sonora, Columbia, and Jamestown were the main sites of gold discovery in 1849. Today, the area is known for its natural beauty and access to many different recreational activities. The high elevation (relative to the nearby agricultural valley) means Twain Harte gets a decent amount of snow in the winter, but remains comfortably warm during the hot summer months. Its location in Tuolumne County is convenient to ski resorts, great hiking trails, and even a national park. Calling itself “Tuolumne County’s breath of fresh air”, this small town is a quaint vacation destination any time of the year.
