Spring Break is your chance to take a break from the long winter and to look forward to the months of warm weather just ahead. It is definitely not a time for prying the sticky shirt off your back and feeling like you’re breathing into a sock.

If you’re trying to avoid the humidity during your springtime vacation, save Cancún and the Caribbean for another time. The great thing about Spring Break season is that it comes right at the cusp of the southern states’ summers, when things are heating up but haven’t yet hit the boil. Now is actually the perfect time to enjoy all the charm of southern beaches without enduring the swelter and the summer bugs.

And if you’re feeling more adventurous, the seasonal swing of Spring Break works in reverse! Head down to the Southern Hemisphere, where their summers have just cooled down. There’s a beach for everyone this spring break, and we’ve got the rentals for whatever your style: resort coasts, historical treks, or a woodsy escape.

Want a Warm Spring Break Without The Humidity? Consider Visiting One of These 15 Beach Spots

Zuma Beach - Malibu, California

Not into the clutter of Los Angeles? Then head west to Zuma Beach in Malibu, one of the Southland’s best-kept secrets. This beach is clean, spacious, and, nestled at the foot of luscious cliffs, will feel like your own private resort. Then, mix up the beach routine with a hike through the Santa Monica Mountains!

Carlsbad State Beach - Carlsbad, California

Carlsbad is a quiet, unpretentious beach town just an hour north of San Diego. It’s also home to Alkaline Artesian Mineral Water, used for therapeutic purposes since its discovery in 1882. Between the mineral water spas, tasty seafood, and affordable vacation rentals, you’ll be kissing your winter blues goodbye before you know it.

Carmel Beach - Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Located at the northern tip of Big Sur, where the Santa Lucia Mountains crash into the Pacific Ocean, Carmel-by-the-Sea is breathtaking. When you’re done drinking your fill of natural beauty, dive into Carmel’s rich cultural history — it’s one of the oldest artist colonies in the country.

St. Simon’s Island Beach - St. Simon’s Island, Georgia

Known simply as “The Island” to locals, St. Simon’s Island is the largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles — where the deciduous east and the marshy south combine in a splash of surf and Spanish moss. A full third of the island’s housing is devoted to vacation rentals, so you’ll have no problem booking your stay.

Pensacola Beach - Pensacola, FL

While Miami is already wiping the sweat off its brow in March, further north, Pensacola is sitting pretty in the cool Gulf breezes. Take in the white sands, the aquamarine waters, and then head inland to gawp at Pensacola’s “novelty houses” like the Dome of a Home built specifically to withstand strong hurricane winds.

St. Augustine Beach - St. Augustine, FL

St. Augustine is for beach and history buffs alike. Located on Florida’s east coast, its pristine beaches will wow you, just like they did the Spanish explorers who settled the town more than 400 years ago. Lucky for us, they left behind the fascinating Castillo de San Marco, and today’s inhabitants have contributed high-end shopping, carefully brewed coffee, and craft beer for your Spring Break pleasure.

Bonita Beach - Naples, FL

You simply can’t go wrong with Naples. This is a classic beach city with everything you could desire: restaurants, bars, and a gorgeous span of coast right on the Gulf. At this time of year, things are just starting to heat up. Highs hang out in the 70s, so you’ll be warm, but not uncomfortably so.

Gulf Islands National Seashore - Ocean Springs, MS

When I say “beach vacation,” you say – Mississippi? That’s right, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, just to the east of Biloxi, may just become your next favorite beach getaway. Come here if you like to combine your fun in the sun with good, old-fashioned camping: this seashore is also a national park, with all the amenities that come with them.

South Padre Island Beaches - South Padre Island, TX

All the way down at the southernmost tip of Texas, just a few miles away from the Mexico border, is South Padre Island. It’s basically your Mexico beach vacation, but without the annoying border traffic. At this time of year, south Texas is a cozy mid-70s paradise. Make sure you work up an appetite on the Gulf surf because South Padre Island boasts some seriously tempting seafood served Tex-Mex style.

International Destinations:

El Faro Beach - Ensenada, Mexico

No need to make Cancún your go-to Mexican getaway. Besides, it’s far too hot this time of year. Head instead to Baja California, where beaches like El Faro offer fabulous sunning, surfing, and in town, wine from their spectacular local vineyards. This is a popular vacation town, though the coasts aren’t crowded with high-rise resorts. What more could you ask for?

Kraljiçina Plaža (Queen’S Beach) - Nin, Croatia

What do you think they call it a Mediterranean climate for? Head to the beaches around these waters to bask in year-round low-humidity warmth. Nin is pretty off the beaten path, but they do have the one thing that matters: beach bars. And there are more populated plazas in Zadar to the south if you want to mix it up.

Cagnes-Sur-Mer Beach - Cagnes-sur-Mer, France

In our survey of beach communities, we would be remiss not to mention the South of France. But you don’t have to be a celebrity or an oil baron to kick back near the French Riviera. Cagnes-sur-Mer is a quieter town, technically a suburb of Nice, with plenty of rentals just waiting for you to rest your weary head after a trying day out on the beach.

Kraljiçina Plaža (Queen’S Beach) - Nin, Croatia

The great thing about Spring Break is it comes right when the Northern Hemisphere is heating up — and right as the Southern Hemisphere is cooling down. So catch the summer’s-end warm waters of New Zealand with a trip to Cape Reinga. And don’t forget your surfboard: this is a go-to spot for devotees of the sport.

Noordhoek Beach - Cape Town, South Africa

Kraljiçina Plaža (Queen’S Beach) - Nin, Croatia is located at the top of the Cape Peninsula, a lush, mountainous stretch of land arcing out from Cape Town proper. Driving this territory you’d never know you were right on the doorstep of a major city because Noordhoek is surrounded by protected parks. Save a day on your vacation to head south to Simon’s Town and visit their penguin preserve!

Pocitos Beach - Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is a far underrated South American country to visit. Brazil and Argentina get all the attention, but Uruguay is nestled right in between them, offering all the perks of mid-South America at more affordable rates. Lounge on the beach, tour the top-rate steakhouses of the city, and, if your heart was really set on Argentina, Buenos Aires is just a half-hour plane ride away.
