Malibu Information

Malibu, CA

If Malibu sounds familiar, it may be because you've heard it paired with "Barbie," "beach," or "celebrity sighting." Malibu is a city is Los Angeles County, California, which stretches for 20-something miles along the Pacific coastline. (Signs in Malibu from the 1990s advertise "27 miles of scenic beauty," but that has been subject to change.) This beach city is home to numerous Hollywood personalities in the entertainment industry. It's also a surfer's paradise, with numerous beaches and the first World's Surfing Reserve at Malibu's Surfrider Beach. You can get the best of both beaches and mountains in Malibu, with the Santa Monica Mountains to the north, and canyons that trail away from the coast. Malibu has a population under 13,000 and is an area where both locals and tourists make the most of their California sunshine.

Things to Do in Malibu

What's a beach without a boardwalk, or in this case, Malibu Pier? This iconic landmark at Surfrider beach is 300-plus yards of good eats, sights and shopping. But Surfrider isn’t the only beach in town. There’s Zuma Beach, which has volleyball nets on site and a mellow vibe; Mattador Beach stands out for its ruggedness, thanks to the cliffs that jut out over the water; and the lesser-known but just-as-scenic Lechuza beach, with its sea cliffs, tidepools, and rock formations. For a hike, try the Zuma Canyon Trail or Solstice Canyon, which has the only year-round waterfall in the Santa Monica Mountains. Where else can you enjoy a beautiful beach view while trekking up six miles of trail that dates back to 1865? If you could put a price on a view, Pepperdine University has done it. It’s one of the most expensive schools in the country, but students get a stellar ocean view from their dorm rooms and are literally just steps from the beach.

Malibu Day Trips

The city of Los Angeles isn’t too far from Malibu, and offers a lot of variety for a day trip. Downtown Los Angeles has progressed over the past couple of years to a more tourist-friendly neighborhood. The Staples Center/ Convention Center area has a handful of good happy hours and shops. Chinatown and Koreatown are both a few miles from downtown Los Angeles, and whether you’re in the mood dimsum, bubble tea, or Korean barbeque, Los Angeles has the best eats. Beverly Hills, California is another area with Malibu-esque luxury vibes, but without the beach backdrop. Driving by some of the million dollar homes will make your jaw drop, and you might even have a celebrity sighting on Rodeo Drive, a shopping area known for its luxury goods stores. If you want to stick with the beach theme and visit other coastal areas, Santa Monica Beach and Venice Beach are close by. Santa Monica Beach seems to be designed for the public, with classic boardwalk rides and attractions along the Santa Monica Pier. Venice Beach has more of a hipster vibe, with artsy stores lining the paths and different personalities hanging out on the boardwalk.

Malibu Accommodation

Accommodations along Malibu’s coast can be romantic but pricey. Travelers to the area should make sure to browse Tripping.com’s great selection of Malibu vacation rentals, as our site displays both charming budget friendly accommodation for rent as well as luxury homes and mansions. There is a cluster of options inland from Point Dume State Beach that range from moderate to expensive. However, this area will give you prime access to all the famous Malibu beaches. If you want more options to hike, the Paradise Cove area is closer to more canyons. Central Malibu is a great place to find lodgings if you plan on spending a lot of time at Escondido Canyon Park. To get a sense of a “Malibu” vacation, the Malibu Point area towards eastern Malibu is where the intermingling of local and tourism occurs.

Malibu Transportation

The Roadrunner Shuttle offers airport transport services between Malibu and Los Angeles Airport. Private companies in Malibu also offer a variety of transportation services like vans and cars; however, some require advanced booking through a site or phone call. The Metro bus is another way to get around. Line 534 on the Metro bus connects Los Angeles to Malibu, with stops at Culver City, Santa Monica and Castellammare in between. Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus also runs through Malibu. Some Malibu resorts, such as Malibu Family Wines, offer private shuttle services and concierge services to local area hotels for visitors.
