Things To Do In Cambridge

Cambridge is home to two of America’s most prestigious universities in Harvard and MIT and they both have stunning campuses that are very interesting to tour, so that should definitely be on your list of things to do in Cambridge. Make sure to visit the Harvard Art Museums that are located on Quincy Street. The oldest museum, which 0pened in 1896, is the Fogg Museum known for its collection of Western paintings, prints, photographs, and sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to the present. The Busch-Reisinger Museum, which opened in 1903, is the only museum in the U.S. exclusively devoted to artwork from the German-speaking countries of Europe. And there is also the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, which contains great pieces of art from countries like China, Japan, and Korea. At the Harvard Museum of Natural History, Cambridge’s most visited museum with nearly a quarter-million visitors each year, you can see a collection of 12,000 specimens. There are permanent exhibits and galleries filled with dinosaurs, fossils, gemstones, meteorites, and the famed Blaschka ‘Glass Flowers’. Adjacent to the Natural History museum is the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, which is one of the world’s oldest and largest museums dedicated to anthropology, founded in 1866. The museum holds over 1.5 million objects and artifacts including a sprawling collection of photographs and maps that date back 10,000 years of history in the Americas. At the Longfellow House—Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site, you can visit the home of the famous American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that doubled as the headquarters for General George Washington during the Revolutionary War in 1775-1776. You can catch a glimpse into the most important part of American history and the site also puts on reenactments, plays, poetry readings and other events. The Harvard Square serves as the historic downtown center of Cambridge where you can stop in many bookstores, boutiques, and coffee shops. Another great Museum to visit is the MIT Museum, which was founded in 1971 and is known for its collections related to the history of MIT, maritime history, holography, photography, robotics, and more. The museum hosts programs and events for children and adults of all ages. Another fun thing to do is to take a boat tour with the Charles Riverboat Company that has been giving visitors the best views of Cambridge from the Charles River Basin and Boston Harbor as well as the opportunity to learn about the maritime history of the area.
