Parker River offers gentle terrain with dunes, shrubs and freshwater marshes, and visitors can walk alongside boardwalks to the ocean, sign up for an education course, and go bird watching. Day Trips Near Newburyport

One popular day trip is nearby Plum Island, a barrier island located off the northeast coast of Massachusetts, just north of Cape Ann. It’s only a 17-minute drive and is located just seven miles away. Other nearby towns that make for great day trips are the summer resort town of Salisbury, the coastal city of Newbury, and Amesbury, which is located across the way on the left bank of the Merrimack River.

There is also the MBTA Commuter Rail, which provides daily train service between Newburyport and Boston, and the MVRTA (Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority), which provides bus service between the towns of Amesbury, Newburyport and Salisbury.
