Palm Beach Information
About Palm Beach
While many of the beaches in Florida exude a thrilling, nightlife-centric vibe, the quaint island of Palm Beach defies that reputation with its own relaxed and easygoing ambiance. The resort town’s name derives from the bountiful grove of palm trees in the area. Accordingly, Palm Beach has a climate reminiscent of a tropical rainforest with wet summers prone to precipitation, and relatively dry winters with less humidity. There are numerous celebrities who formerly and currently reside in Palm Beach like musician John Lennon, radio personality Howard Stern, and author James Patterson.
Things to do in Palm Beach
Also called Whitehall, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is one of the town’s most popular points of interest. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Whitehall is an incredible palace-like mansion built by Henry Flagler, one of Standard Oil’s founders. The building was modeled after European palaces and constructed around an expansive courtyard. Open to the public, Whitehall is a breathtaking display of luxury. Just a few miles north from Palm Beach is Peanut Island which boasts the Detachment Hotel, a secret bunker designed for President John F. Kennedy in case of a nuclear war. Closed a few years after initially being built, the Detachment Hotel now serves as a popular tourist spot. Visitors can tour Palm Beach by foot or bicycle by taking the Lake Trail, a well-paved pathway that provides a scenic route through the town. Stop at one of the eateries along the way, or enjoy a meal al fresco on a patch of grass. Bikes can be rented at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop. Another noteworthy attraction is Phipps Ocean Park, a quiet oceanfront space with a guarded beach, picnic areas, and barbecue pits. The beach’s shallow coast makes it ideal for wading and snorkeling.
Day trips from Palm Beach
About a two hour’s drive southward from Palm Beach is the vibrant neighborhood of South Beach in Miami. The trendy area is renowned for its abundance of trendy dance halls and nightclubs. Moreover, prominent festivals are hosted in South Beach like the internationally-acclaimed Art Basel exhibition of artwork, and Urban Beach Week, a typically five-day long celebration replete with parties and live hip-hop music performances. As for fun, family-friendly destinations, the amusement parks Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World are only a two and a half hour’s worth of driving northward from the beach town.
Palm Beach accommodations
Palm Beach has no shortage of spectacular properties with picturesque views of the beach. Choose from deluxe suites with a balcony and spacious studios to cozy condos and cottages. There is an unforgettable vacation rental to fit almost any budget or preference.
Transportation in Palm Beach
The public transit bus system is operated by Palm Tran. However, Taxis and driving are the predominant ways of getting around on the island. Bicycling is also popular in Palm Beach, but a large number of areas do not contain adequately designated or paved paths. Consequently, biking safely may become an issue if the itinerary isn’t planned out ahead of time.
