About Stonington
Situated on along the southeast corner of Connecticut, Stonington played an important role in the war of 1812. Four British vessels approached Stonington in August, 1814 and commanded the town to surrender. The people immediately fought back for three days, killing and wounding many British soldiers. The Royal Navy retreated and Stonington, having not lost one person to the fighting, was remained in control of itself. Present-day Stonington is a small town with just over 18,500 residents and the perfect spot for a relaxing, New England summer getaway.
Things to do in Stonington
For a historically-filled day, start at Stonington’s Old Lighthouse Museum. This attraction houses many artifacts from the Stonington area and stands at the entrance to the Stonington harbor. Go on a clear day and you can climb the lighthouse tower to see Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York, From the lighthouse museum, stop at South Studio Six for a look at some modern day artwork. Then, head over to the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House Museum, a preserved National Historic Landmark. Palmer, born and raised in Stonington, was the first American to discover Antarctica. The Mystic Aquarium is a main attraction in Stonington. Visitors can explore the many fish coral reefs, and jellyfish in tanks. The aquarium boasts over 35 African penguins that guests can view above and below water. Most notably, the aquarium is home the the largest outdoor beluga whale exhibit in the country. The aquarium also offers summer programs, youth and family conservation programs, and loads of events including “Cocktails with the Whales” and “Pancakes with the Penguins.” Give yourself some time to explore all of the fun this aquarium has to offer.

Mason’s Island, a 600-acre island at the mouth of the Mystic River, was named after Major John Mason when he was granted the land in recognition for his military service. At the center of the island is a 47-acre nature preserve featuring woods that can be accessed by hiking trails. Transportation in Stonington
To get to Stonington from out of state, fly into Providence, Rhode Island. You can rent a car for your trip at the airport and drive about an hour southwest to get to your destination.
