Narragansett Information

About Narragansett

Narragansett has four of Rhode Island's most popular beaches making it a favorite summer destination amongst the state's residents. So much so that the town's population nearly doubles during the summer months. This town with the intimidating long name is lovingly referred to as "Gansett" by those in the know. It became hugely popular in the late 1800s as a summer getaway for Bostonians and New Yorkers. Narragansett still remains a perfect escape. Narragansett was once a wealthy community similar to nearby Newport. Years later, the rich history of the town is still visible. The Towers is the last remaining section of the famous Narragansett Pier Casino built in 1883. Summer tours are available while the city works on restoring the building. Of course, tourists flock to the beaches of Narragansett Bay. The “breakwater” barrier protection provides a more varied and fluctuating surf and can be more suitable for novice swimmers. No matter what you're interested in, clear ocean waters, cool breezes and bright sunshine will beckon you to this Rhode Island destination.

Things to do in Narragansett

Rhode Island has numerous beautiful beaches for sunbathing, sand castle building and long strolls. Narragansett Town Beach is located right in the center of Narragansett, but it does charge a fee. It's $10 to park ($15 on weekends and holidays) and $8 to enter the beach. Scarborough State Beach has two separate areas and 2,325 feet of sandy beach frontage. Both the North and South areas have a pavilion, showers, picnic tables, boardwalk and observation tower. Roger Wheeler State Beach and Salty Brine State Beach are both located in Point Judith, the southernmost point of Narragansett. Both of these beaches are protected by the breakwater that protects the port of Galilee. Other great attractions are the Point Judith Lighthouse and the South County Museum.

Only 45 minutes away from Narragansett is Rhode Island's capital, Providence. Known as one of the best places to live in the United States, it's also a great place to spend the weekend. Visit historic sites and wonderful museums or try the mega-mall and scenic Riverwalk. One of the city's top attractions is The Roger Williams Zoo. Children and adults alike will love the Tropical Rainforest Building where "spunky monkeys" roam free in a constructed jungle-like environment. About an hour and a half away lies Connecticut's capital city, Hartford. Hartford has its own slew of historical attractions, revitalized riverfront and beautiful parks and gardens. Visit in the end of June or beginning of July to catch the Elizabeth Park rose gardens in bloom. To see the city from above, visit the observation deck of Travelers Tower. You may even spot the Tower's two resident falcons!
