Leadville Information
About Leadville
Only 1 square mile and over 10,000 feet above sea level, Leadville is a small mountain town in the middle of Colorado. It was settled in the 1850s during the gold rush, but it never became a major settlement because the gold quickly ran out. It was, however, a very successful silver and lead camp, becoming one of the largest and most profitable locations in the world. However, this wealth caused Leadville to earn a reputation of lawlessness and brutality; it was a true gun-slinging, heavy drinking, wild western town. Today, Leadville is a town with many historical sites and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Margaret “Molly Brown, also known as “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” lived in Leadville and became very wealthy from her family’s involvement in gold mining. She is famous for surviving the sinking of the Titanic, portrayed in the 1997 film by Kathy Bates.
