Leadville Information

About Leadville

Only 1 square mile and over 10,000 feet above sea level, Leadville is a small mountain town in the middle of Colorado. It was settled in the 1850s during the gold rush, but it never became a major settlement because the gold quickly ran out. It was, however, a very successful silver and lead camp, becoming one of the largest and most profitable locations in the world. However, this wealth caused Leadville to earn a reputation of lawlessness and brutality; it was a true gun-slinging, heavy drinking, wild western town. Today, Leadville is a town with many historical sites and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Margaret “Molly Brown, also known as “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” lived in Leadville and became very wealthy from her family’s involvement in gold mining. She is famous for surviving the sinking of the Titanic, portrayed in the 1997 film by Kathy Bates.

Things to do in Leadville

Explore the Rocky Mountains via train on the highest railroad in North America. The Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad slowly winds through valleys and peaks, rewarding travelers with wildlife viewing. A knowledgeable guide narrates the ride, and concessions are available for the journey. If you are traveling in the winter, be sure to look into ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains. Ski Cooper is easily accessible from Leadville, and this 70-year-old resort has runs for every age and ability level. There are 39 runs, but it works hard to keep from being crowded or pretentious. Enjoy panoramic views of some of Colorado’s highest peaks while skiing some pristine trails. Take a break between adventure activities and stroll through the Western Hardware Antique Mall. This two-story antiques mall offers everything from Western memorabilia to vintage toys. Located in a restored hardware store, this antique shop is truly a goldmine of history.

Outside of the numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation, Breckenridge has a quaint downtown area and a handful of local breweries.
