Only 1 square mile and over 10,000 feet above sea level, Leadville is a small mountain town in the middle of Colorado. It was settled in the 1850s during the gold rush, but it never became a major settlement because the gold quickly ran out. It was, however, a very successful silver and lead camp, becoming one of the largest and most profitable locations in the world. However, this wealth caused Leadville to earn a reputation of lawlessness and brutality; it was a true gun-slinging, heavy drinking, wild western town. Margaret “Molly Brown, also known as “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” lived in Leadville and became very wealthy from her family’s involvement in gold mining.
