Crested Butte Information

Formerly a coal mining town in Gunnison County, the charming community of Crested Butte is presently referred to by many as, "the last great Colorado ski town.” Crested Butte has an extended wintery climate with low humidity and high quantities of snow. There are occasionally clear days with relatively minimal precipitation. Due to its prolonged snowy weather, the town has been the main filming location and setting for quite a few films.

Crested Butte is a distinguished destination for outdoorsy visitors who want to partake in recreational activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater river rafting, fishing, and hiking. Accordingly, Crested Butte Mountain Resort is the go-to place for winter sports like snowboarding and skiing. In February, Crested Butte hosts an unforgettable Mardi Gras celebration amidst the snow. Summer events are especially exciting. In June, the town holds Crested Butte Bike Week where participants compete in mountain bike races or simply trek on untrodden roads. During July, the community features its week-long Crested Butte Wildflower Festival which has performances, tours, hikes, and educational workshops about environmental conservation. Thousands of artists and vendors convene at this festival each year. Other prominent events include the Crested Butte International Film Festival, Crested Butte Music Festival, and Paragon Peoples' Fair.

Situated about an hour’s drive south from the town is the breathtaking Curecanti National Recreation Area. Replete with spectacular tablelands, reservoirs, and steep canyons, this national recreation area is a point of interest that attracts nature lovers. There is also an archeological district that spans over thousands of miles that is home to dinosaur fossils. Curecanti National Recreation Area has several walking and hiking trails with different levels of difficulty including Dillon Pinnacles, Neversink, and Hermit’s Rest. The Gunnison National Forest is located southeast from Crested Butte with about an hour and a half worth of driving. Created in June 1905 by President Roosevelt, this U.S. National Forest extends over a million acres. With 7 designated wilderness areas such as Fossil Ridge Wilderness, Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, and Powderhorn Wilderness, the national forest has an abundance of incredible flora and fauna. To the north of the Gunnison National Forest is the White River National Forest which houses 8 additional wilderness areas, impressive fourteeners, and a dozen ski areas like the Aspen Highlands, Copper Mountain, and Beaver Creek.

Accordingly, each bus was thoughtfully painted by a local artist. Throughout the summer season, Mountain Express also operates a shuttle that makes a stop in the town of Gothic.
