Nevada City stands at the gateway to Tahoe National Forest, which is perfect for campers and backpackers alike. Many people like to go fishing in the Sierra Nevada, and there are also many gold-panning opportunities in some of the Nevada Country Rivers such as the South Yuba River at Bridgeport, Edwards Crossing and Washington, and on the Middle Yuba River at Oregon Creek. There are two public golf courses and three semiprivate ones in the general Grass Valley-Nevada City area, and the local courses are open year-round. Go for a hike amongst nature in the nearby South Yuba River canyon, as well as in Tahoe National Forest and Grouse Ridge Lakes Basin. In the historic downtown area, you can visit some of the local art galleries and studios, all located along Broad Street. Take in a live theatre experience at Off Broadstreet, the Nevada Theatre, and Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Nevada City is also home to two film festivals: the Nevada City Film Festival, and the Wild & Scenic Film Festival—the nation’s premiere environmental and activist film fest. Other points of interest include the National Hotel, which is the oldest operating hotel in California, along with the Sargent House and old Firehouse No.2.

Sacramento is a one-hour drive via the eastbound Interstate 80 and northbound Highway 49. Reno, Nevada is 90 minutes away, and the town of Truckee is 50 minutes away via the westbound I-80 and Highway 20. Lake Tahoe ski areas are just over an hour away from Nevada City, while the Donner Summit skiing area is only 45 minutes away.
