Things to do in Sierra City
Lakes Basin is perhaps the most popular attraction in Sierra City. This breathtaking cluster of lakes is connected by foot trails that wind through fields of flowers and plant life. Around each corner, you’re bound to come across a new lake, as there over 20 lakes that make up Lakes Basin. The hiking trails in this region provide easy access to discovering the different lakes, and the area offers visitors biking, fishing, boating, and camping options. Visitors to Lakes Basin can also partake in horseback riding, swimming windsurfing, and hunting in designated areas. The Sierra Buttes provide a gorgeous backdrop to many of the lakes and recreation areas, so bring your camera and enjoy a day outdoors. Although the lakes are must-sees, the North Yuba River is the place to go on a hot summer day. The river is known for having plenty of swimming holes, so stroll along it long enough and you’re bound to come across clear pools at the foot of rock boulders that make for perfect natural diving boards. The water is icy cold, and the swimming hole near Butte Resort is a local favorite for hanging out during the warmer months. Hiking through the Sierra Buttes is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. These huge, craggy mountains provide ample hiking trails of varying difficulty. Start your day with a 5-mile round trip hike to the fire tower. The steep, 178 steps up to the fire tower mark the end of this out and back hike, but once you’re up there the view from the top is one of the best in the Sierra Buttes. There are plenty of other hikes, some more difficult than others, so grab a map before choosing which hikes you want to conquer during your vacation.
