Desert View Information

About Desert View

Desert View, California is located just 10 minutes outside of Palm Springs in Mt. San Jacinto State Park. It’s known for its many biomes and hiking trails, and proximity to some of the best climbing rocks in the world at Tahquitz Peak. The Long Valley Ranger Station and Skyline Trail are both easily accessible from Desert View and Palm Springs provides all the amenities you need during your vacation. Take a trip to Desert View and see what draws hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers alike to visit this place.

Things to do in Desert View

If you’re not afraid of heights, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, located just minutes from Desert View, is a great place to start your vacation. You’ll get the chance to view the Coachella Valley from aboard the tram as it creeps all the way up to the top of San Jacinto Peak, rotating as it goes so you’ll see the view from every angle. The tramway is the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world. Prior to the tramway’s construction, hikers were the only ones who could experience this view, as the only way to the top was an almost full-day-long hike from nearby Idyllwild. Your 12-and-a-half-minute ride to the peak climbs up North America’s sheerest mountain face and passes through 5 different biomes. You’ll even get to “view” the San Andreas Fault from over 8,000 feet! The Skyline Trail, also known as Cactus to Clouds, is an 18-mile long hike from the desert floor in Palm Springs to the summit. It is an intense, all-day affair, and should only be considered if you are in proper shape and have plenty of water, food, hiking poles, and a headlamp. If you’re ready for the challenge, start at the Palm Springs Art Museum and hike toward the Long Valley Ranger Station. You’ll need to refill your water supply at the station, so be sure to remember to do that while you’re there. Make the trek up over 8,000 feet in elevation and enjoy the view from the summit. Taking the Aerial tramway is the preferred method of getting back down the mountain, so make sure to bring enough money to pay your fare. Again, this is an intense hike, so make sure you’re prepared before setting out. Tahquitz Peak boasts some of the best rock climbing and bouldering. The rock is a high-quality granite that varies from smooth to rough and everything in between. Be careful around the north side of Tahquitz, as it is notorious for loose rock. To climb any part of the peak, you’ll need an adventure pass and a hiking permit, both of which can be purchased from the Idyllwild Ranger station. The peak is most crowded during late Spring and Summer, as the weather is the best for it.

Day Trips from Desert View

If you haven’t yet ventured into Idyllwild-Pine Cove either seeking food or your adventure pass for climbing, it’s a great spot for a nice day trip. Filled with antique stores, quaint art galleries, and bookstores, Idyllwild offers visitors quiet escape into an accommodating small town. The town hosts the annual Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema where, every January, you can catch film showings and meet enthusiastic producers, writers, and filmmakers. If you want a little more outdoor time, though, head to Idyllwild Nature Center where kids and adults can learn about the natural environment in town. The center’s picnic areas are perfectly set among pine trees and the nature trails lead visitors to and from its hub. Take the 1-hour drive to Idyllwild and escape the desert heat as you enjoy a day out on the town in this quaint community.
