Newport Information

About Newport

Newport is a city along the Oregon coast that has been an attractive vacation destination since the late 1800s. Its proximity to the Coast Mountains, Pacific Ocean and Yaquina Bay gives it major appeal. The entire city is a natural observatory where people of all ages can explore and learn more about the world around them. Newport’s historic Nye Beach was the number one visitor attraction on the coast in the early 1900s. The beach is still popular to this day, but the town is also a unique haven for the arts, with a bustling commercial waterfront.

Things to do in Newport

Newport is home to the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. The Yaquina Head lighthouse is a 93-foot-tall structure built in the early 1870s—the second oldest active lighthouse in the state. The site is on an area created by lava flow 14 million years ago. Nye Beach, South Jetty and Moolack Beach are great for exploring tide pools and seeing marine life in their natural habitats. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is where you can get an up-close look at marine life. Newport may not have the largest aquarium, but it has an impressive outdoor section; a petting area for octopus and starfish; and a glass tunnel through the shark habitat. After you visit the aquarium, there are two areas of town you could check out. The historical Bayfront is a waterfront with numerous shops, galleries, restaurants and family attractions. It’s the home of one of Oregon’s largest commercial fishing fleets, a testament to the port’s role of housing commercial and wood products industries through history. The Nye Beach area is the other noteworthy visitor attraction, with its hot sea baths, taffy stores and waterfront shops. The Newport Performing Arts and Visual Arts Center is nearby, along with numerous eateries, bookstores, galleries and shopping venues.
