Detroit Information

About Detroit

Arguably, no other city in the United States has seen the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows than Detroit. From the birthplace of the United States vehicle industry to a recent bankruptcy, Detroit has had its fair share of monumental events. Nicknamed the “Motor City,” Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and home to a plethora of tourism options that encompass museums, world-class restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, a growing art culture, and live music.

Things To Do In Detroit

The metro Detroit area is divided into a variety of neighborhoods but in general it is divided into five destination districts that are well suited for tourism: Dearborn/Wayne, Downtown Detroit, Greater Novi, Macomb, and Oakland. Dearborn/Wayne is the birthplace of Henry Ford and here visitors will find a great deal of art, culture, and dining establishments. This district houses institutions such as the Automotive Hall of Fame (learn about the pioneers of the global auto industry), the Arab American National Museum (the only museum in the United States dedicated to highlighting the contributions of Arab Americans), and The Henry Ford Museum (museum dedicated to the man himself). Downtown Detroit is Detroit’s most cosmopolitan area as it the city’s international border to Canada and has a beautiful riverfront. Highlights of Downtown include the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Renaissance Center (shopping complex which is also the home of General Motors), Detroit Historical Museum, Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), Ford Field (home of the Detroit Lions), Cobo Center, and the Philip A. Hart Plaza (home to Jazz Fest). Greater Novi is known for its shopping, quaint and historical downtown, as well as its fine dining experience. Highlights of the destination include Twelve Oaks Mall (shopping mall with nearly 200 stores, services, and restaurants), Palace Sports & Entertainment (home of the Detroit Pistons), and The Holocaust Memorial Center. Macomb houses miles and miles of shoreline so this district is all about aquatic activities. Visitors can rent a boat and go fishing or spend the day swimming and their evenings dining at one of the many dining establishments. Other highlights include Freedom Hill Amphitheatre (live music venue) and the Macomb Center For The Performing Arts. Oakland is a suburb of Detroit is known for the Detroit Zoo and its lively downtown area.
