If you’re visiting the University, then you already know you must go to a football or basketball game (depending on the season). Also on campus is the Museum of Natural History, which houses fossils, ancient artifacts, and wildlife exhibits. Another must see is the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, which is over 100 years old and consists of more than 700 acres of gardens, research areas, and natural preserves. If you’re traveling with the whole family, then you should definitely take the kids to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. Be sure to see a concert at Hill Auditorium or go to the restored Michigan Theater for a great nighttime activity. When you get hungry be sure to try some of the following places: Zingerman’s Delicatessen, Mani Osteria, Pacific Rim by Kana, Sava’s, or Jolly Pumpkin.

If you have time while you’re visiting Ann Arbor but want to get outside the city, there is a myriad of things to do. Detroit is about an hour’s drive away and there is so much to do that you might need two days. If you’re a car enthusiast then a day trip to Detroit and the various museums is for you. Even if cars are not your cup of tea, there are still other museums, shops, and adventures to be had. You could also plan a trip up to Mackinac Island. It’s about a four-hour drive to the ferry dock in Mackinaw City, so leave early to check the first morning ferry. Spend the day on an island where the car has been banned since as far back as the 1890s. Walk, bike, or ride in carriages around this Victorian style island and don’t forget to try some fudge!
