About Clearlake
Home to the largest natural freshwater lake in California, Clearlake is a city located in Lake County that is known as the land of bass fishing with more than a hundred miles of shoreline. Just a couple hours away from San Francisco, Clearlake also has a happening wine tasting scene, offering plenty of fun activities to do both indoors and outdoors.
Things to Do in Clearlake
Thanks to a soil rich in volcanic ash, Clearlake has a blossoming variety of fine wines—particularly its Cabernets and Sauvignon Blancs. There are many topnotch wineries and tasting rooms that offer tours, including Abbott Winery, Brassfield Estate Winery, and Moore Family Winery. Rent a boat and fishing gear at Clear Lake (which has bluegill, catfish, carp, and crappie), and go stargazing at Clear Lake State Park. To see the stars up close, visit Taylor Observatory on the west side of the lake. They host public events from 8 to 11pm on the fourth Saturday of every month. Camping facilities are available at Clear Lake State Park. From early December to May, visitors can observe the migration of approximately 15,000 gray whales heading south for the summer. Visit the Courthouse Museum, which is located between Library Park in downtown Lakeport, that has an extensive collection of local history, Native American, and early pioneer artifacts.
Day Trips Near Clearlake
There are many great nearby escapes that make for great day trips near Clearlake, among them Mendocino, which is a three-hour drive up the coast from San Francisco. Another great place to visit is the former logging town of Eureka, which is an additional two hours north. San Francisco is two hours away from Clearlake by car, and Sacramento is and hour and a half to Clearlake. Sonoma is an hour and 42 minutes south of Clearlake, while Napa is an hour and a half south of Clearlake.
Clearlake Accommodation
There are many wonderful lakefront properties in Clearlake that offer convenience to activities and pristine lake views. Cobb is a nice mountain community with a quieter feel, while other nice nearby communities include Kelseyville (southwest part of the lake), Clearlake Park (southeast section), and Upper Lake (top portion of the lake). Hidden Valley Lake is a private gated community that has its own private lake with beaches, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and 24-hour security.
Transportation in Clearlake
A rental car is the most convenient way to get around Clearlake and to travel to nearby attractions, but Clearlake also has a convenient public bus system that makes it easy to get around. The Lake Transit Service has multiple routes that operate all around Clear Lake, servicing everywhere from Kelseyville and Upper Lake to part of Mendocino County. In addition to the fixed bus route, the Mendocino Transit Authority (MTA) offers the Dial-A-Ride service, and Amtrak provides service between Humboldt County and Martinez with stops in Mendocino County, Sonoma, Solano, and Napa.
