Rio Nido Information

About Rio Nido

Rio Nido is a quaint unincorporated community tucked away in northern California's Sonoma County. The Russian River, one of the largest rivers in the metropolitan area, flows through the community. Exuding a small town charm, Rio Nido serves as a prominent seasonal getaway with its abundance of cabins and summer homes. While the winters are relatively wet and chilly, the summer months are dry and warm, which makes the community perfect for outdoor recreation and exploration.

Things to do in Rio Nido

Folks with nostalgia for the 1930s and 1940s should make a beeline to the famed Rio Nido Roadhouse, a popular local haunt that preserves the dynamic spirit of the past. Offering a gazebo and outdoor stage, Rio Nido Roadhouse regularly hosts live music performances on the weekend. Ranging from hot jazz and swing music, to country and rock 'n roll, the featured bands aim to provide patrons with energetic, danceable tunes. Additionally, the venue boasts a hefty menu of classic American comfort foods, Tex-Mex favorites, and a variety of IPAs and beers on tap. During the summer from the weekends falling on Memorial Day until Labor Day, Rio Nido’s community pool experiences an influx of visitors. There is a lifeguard who is always on duty at the pool. Moreover, visitors can hang out on the outdoor patio or grab a hot dog or hamburger at the snack bar. Another family-friendly spot is Bruno Farnocchia Memorial Park. This park is home to tennis courts, a playground, horseshoe pits, and areas for picnics and barbecues. The community garden and dog park are also situated in this expansive green space.

Day trips from Rio Nido

Driving northward from Rio Nido for about two and a half hours leads to the community of Mendocino, a delightful seaside attraction boasting a gorgeous coastline and artist colony. In December, Mendocino celebrates the winter season with its Holiday Lights Parade, a festive event filled with bright, illuminated floats and cheerful carols. The month of March brings the community's annual Whale Festival, which highlights an art exhibition, food tastings and wine, and fun activities like whale watching. The oceanfront city of Fort Bragg, an old military outpost, is also about two and a half hour's drive northward from Rio Nido. Aside from its military history, Fort Bragg is renowned for its breathtaking Glass Beach. The beach earned its name since sea glass covers its shores. This phenomenon occurred after residents in the early 1900s dumped garbage onto the beach, and the water eventually pounded and broke down the litter into smooth pieces of colorful sea glass.
