Leamington is close to Canada’s border, and it takes less than an hour to drive into the United States. If you head northeast, you’ll get to Detroit, Michigan, where you’ll find a revival of lush, green spaces and a revitalized downtown area. Nicknamed the “Motor City,” Detroit has long-standing ties to the auto industry. Such influences have inspired everything from the city’s events, to its arts and culture. You could stop just shy of Detroit, and visit Windsor, Ontario, known as a little town of big “firsts.” Windsor was the first region where hockey was played, near Canada’s first college. The world’s first pumpkin regatta and first agricultural fair were both also held in Windsor. If you travel inland away from the border, stop by Chatham-Kent to discover the most poignant stops along the Underground Railroad. This region became home to some of the most successful black settlements of former slaves. Located north of Leamington is Lake St. Clair, a freshwater gem that’s surrounded by hundreds of destinations and attractions. There are tons of swimming holes and beaches for family-friendly fun, as well as unique restaurants and nightlife hotspots for the over-21 crowd.
