Kawartha Lakes is situated just to the northeast of Toronto. Kawartha Lakes is a rural municipality in Ontario, Canada and is made up of several towns and cities. Some of the more popular communities are: Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee and Woodville.
Things to Do in Kawartha Lakes
There are so many different things to do and see in Kawartha Lakes. Each town has its own personality and it’s hard not to fall in love with each and every one of them. The Kawartha Settlers’ Village is a must see in Bobcaygeon as is Lock 32. Also the Globus Theatre and Arts Barn in Bobcaygeon are amazing. In Lindsay, check out Olde Gaol Museum, Century Theatre, Academy Theatre, and Ken Reid Conservation Area. A visit to the Dromoland Orchard & Stables is a must while in Little Britain. The Horseless Carriage Museum in Fenelon Falls is spectacular and afterwards, go to the Little Pie Shack for some delicious sweets. There are all sorts of fantastic little shops all around in each town. As for restaurants, your best bet is to ask a local where he/she eats. There are just too many great finds to list.
Day Trips from Kawartha Lakes
If you have somehow run out of things to do in this amazing part of Ontario, then the closest stop for a bit of big city fun is Toronto. Toronto is less than two hours away by car and makes for the perfect day trip. If you’ve never been to Toronto then you must first go to the CN Tower and have lunch in the restaurant at the top. The restaurant turns on the axis of the tower and provides the most amazing view of the city from all angles. Next check out the Royal Museum Ontario. If you’re visiting anytime other than winter, go to Casa Loma, which is a beautiful castle with spectacular seasonal gardens. Visiting the Toronto Zoo is a great activity, especially if traveling with children. You can also visit Niagara Falls. The drive (one way) is just under three hours and makes for a great day trip for people of all ages.

There’s no really no better way to spend a vacation than waking up and having the water be the first thing you see each morning. However, if a hotel is the better fit for you then there are some great options depending on which towns you want to stay in. If traveling to Lindsay, stay at: Days Inn & Suites, Admiral Inn & Conference Centre, Kent Inn, Knights Inn, Victoria Motel, or Howard Johnson Lindsay. If you’re going to visit Peterborough then book here: Angel’s Rest Bed & Breakfast, Holiday Inn, Peterborough Inn & Suites Hotel, Robyn’s Motel, or Comfort Inn & Suites. If traveling to Fowlers Corner, you must stay at the Stillwater on the Lake. The Triple T Cedar Resort is also an amazing place to stay and is located right on the water near Cowan’s Bay. All along Sturgeon Lake there are numerous resorts to choose from for the perfect weekend. Balsam Lake also has a few resorts on its eastern shores.
Transportation in Kawartha Lakes
There are a variety of transportation methods available to those traveling to Kawartha Lakes. Kawartha Lakes Municipal Airport makes both commercial and private air travel easy and efficient. Also, all towns and cities are interconnected via rivers, streams and lakes. These waterways are best navigated May through October. Although there are no water taxis, there are plenty of boat and houseboat rentals available. If you prefer to travel by land, then renting a car gives you all the freedom to go where and when you want. Renting a car is also probably your best option for traveling by land because there is very limited public transportation.
