Haliburton Information

About Haliburton

Known as Ontario’s tourist heart, Haliburton is one of the best locations in Canada to explore the great outdoors. Sometimes referred to as the Haliburton Highlands, the county is a mecca for vacationers looking to get away from city life. In fact, it’s one of the most popular places in Ontario for people to own cottages. Each season offers a new experience in Haliburton, but the family friendly atmosphere and vibrant arts and antiques scene thrive throughout the year.

Things to do in Haliburton

The county has some of the most stunning scenery in Ontario, with lakefront vistas, unspoiled wilderness and rugged terrain. The Algonquin Provincial Park is a perfect example of the area’s natural wonders. The park is known worldwide for supporting a diversity of wildlife, with frequent bear and moose sightings by visitors. The Haliburton Forest Wildlife Reserve is another top destination for vacationers, best known for its Wolf Centre, where visitors can observe a wolf pack in natural surroundings. The Reserve also offers a range of unique activities such as treetop canopy tours, remote lake fishing and winter dog sledding. During the warmer seasons, water sports are popular in Haliburton County. Several water ski and wakeboard schools offer lessons for people of all skill levels. During the winter, Haliburton County hosts the National Pond Hockey Championship, where hundreds of people from across Canada compete for the coveted first-place title. Snowmobiling is another popular winter activity, with hundreds of kilometers of snowmobile trails to explore. The Haliburton Highlands has scores of local attractions and special events impervious to the seasons, such as the Cozy Corner Restaurant on the town’s main street, and Head Lake Park, located in the center of town. Head Lake Park becomes particularly alive on weekends, when weekend concerts, fairs or music events take place.

It’s located on the Otonabee River, so isn’t completely apart from nature, but also has plenty of metropolitan attractions including museums, memorials and galleries. If you’d rather avoid cities entirely, stick with the nature theme and head for Kawartha Lakes, the houseboating capital of Ontario. Just as Haliburton County is popular among people who own cottages, Kawartha Lakes attracts boat owners and those who enjoy outdoor water activities. Fishing and camping are among the top activities at Kawartha Lakes.
