Canmore Information

About Canmore

Located in the southwest corner of Alberta, Canada, Canmore is a 5-minute drive from Banff National Park. The park isn’t the only attraction here, as Canmore has a rich music and arts scene, too. The town was originally established after Queen Victoria granted it a coal mining charter, with the first mine opened in 1887. Nearby Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, and Canmore hosted the Nordic events. This was a pivotal time for the town, and it resulted in an increase in tourism that helped Canmore become the recreation tourist town it is today.

Things to do in Canmore

Much of the Canmore area is a designated wildlife corridor. This means you’ll have ample opportunities to see bears, cougars, wolves, and elk move between habitats. Catch a glimpse of these animals when you take a hike on the Montaine Traverse Trail or the Highline Trail, both of which have recently been improved. The Three Sisters are a trio of peaks that all top an elevation of over 8,800 feet, the highest, Big Sister, standing at a whopping 9,632 feet. Trails lead hikers up all three mountains, but the view from the ground is just as breathtaking. Go around sunset and enjoy the colors of the mountains reflected in the Bow River. Canmore has a booming cultural arts, music, and food scene. The town hosts its annual Canmore Uncorked every April where local restaurants offer price-set menus, cooking classes are offered, and culinary events take place. The Canmore Music Folk Festival is held annually in August. This 30-year-old festival is the oldest of its kind in Alberta and draws local and well-known talented artists to its stages. The arts are not left behind, as the Canmore ArtsPeak Arts Festival features local artwork and live music. Not in town for this event? You can still check out the local art at any one of the 10 art galleries scattered throughout Canmore. Banff National Park is located just outside the city limits of Canmore, but a quick 5-minute drive will take you to one of the most beautiful parks in Alberta. Established in 1885 in the Rocky Mountains, Banff is Canada’s oldest national park. In the summertime, you can test your whitewater rafting skills in Kicking Horse River or take a leisurely hike on Johnston Canyon’s popular trail. The Rockpile Trail is tourist-friendly, as it offers easy hiking trails with gorgeous scenery. Don’t forget to stop by the hot springs for the ultimate relaxation among nature. Banff Upper Hot Springs is situated in between majestic mountains and towering trees. You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity, so come in the morning when the locals come and you’re sure to start your day off right.

Day Trips from Canmore

Just a little over 60 miles to the east is Calgary, the largest city in Alberta. On the last Wednesday of every month, Calgary puts on Downtown Libations, a series of happy hour events at lounges, pubs, and restaurants throughout the city. Throughout September, Calgary hosts the Calgary International Festival, a 12-day showcase of 200 features and short films from Canada and 40+ countries. Be sure to make some time in your trip to visit Stephen Avenue Walk, Calgary’s historic pedestrian mall. The Stephen Avenue Galleria Trees are an attraction you shouldn’t miss here. Originally designed to reduce wind gusts from the nearby skyscrapers, the sculptures also feature a built-in audio system that plays different music throughout the year. They’re a Calgary icon, so don’t miss them!
