You’ll also get a chance to see the Icefields Parkway, where panoramic views, wildlife, and the jagged, glacier peaks of the icefields will greet you. This is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive from one national park to the next with just a short drive on the parkway. Along the way, take in the sights of the peaks and valleys, wilderness and open skies. Millions of visitors come every year to explore the Banff National Park, but did you know there is actually an operating hot spring pool within the park? That’s right, Banff Upper Hot Spring is probably the most relaxing thing you can do inside the park. Take a break from your hiking and kayaking icefield adventures to enjoy the peaceful pools in the middle of the protected national park. If you’re up for more, you can also check out Radium Hot Springs, located just a 30-minute drive from Banff, and Miette Hot Springs, located inside Jasper National Park just across the Icefields Parkway. From Banff, Kootenay National Park is just a 30-minute drive. Kootenay is known for its seemingly endless trails that wind throughout the park’s incredible scenery. The park has two major rivers flowing through it, the Kootenay River and the Vermillion River. The major attractions for tourists are Olive Lake, Marble Canyon, Sinclair Canyon, and the Paint Pots, which are ochre beds of varying colors from yellow to red to brown that native tribes used to use in their daily lives. You’ll run into bighorn sheep and maybe even the native rubber boa snake. You’ll encounter marmots and moose, grizzly bears and wolverines. The best way to see all of these creatures and take in the scenery is by hiking. Kaufman Lake is a full-day hiking destination, so start by heading out to there if you want to explore deeper into the park and get a glimpse of some of the wildlife.
Transportation in Banff
The best way to get in Banff from out of the area is to fly into Calgary International Airport. From Calgary, rent a car or check to see if your resort/accommodations in Banff offers a shuttle system. The drive will take just about an hour and a half. While in Banff you can take the local bus system called Roam. With three routes connecting the town and four hybrid buses take you where you need to go, you won’t have a problem getting around.
