About
Visitors from all over the world flock to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Maranhão, Brazil to feast their eyes on one of the most peculiar and beautiful natural wonders in the world. The National Park is composed of crystal clear ponds surrounded by large patches of rolling sand dunes.
Though it appears to be a magical oasis in the middle of the desert, the park isn't technically located in the desert at all. In fact, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is part of the Amazon and gets a great deal of rainfall during the year to replenish its ponds. The ponds even stay full enough during the dry season to support populations of many different species of fish.
Travel Advice
Since the park doesn't allow private vehicle access, you'll need to catch a ride through one of the the scheduled bus and truck services. Visitors highly recommend bare-foot hiking through the dunes, especially during sunset. And, of course, you'll want to take a dip in the fairytale-like ponds. Whether you're quickly passing through or plan to stay at the park for a couple days, this is one Brazilian destination you won't want to miss.
