Green Lake Information

About Green Lake

The shores of Green Lake in Wisconsin harbor the oldest resort town west of Niagara Falls. This picturesque community isn’t just a quiet place to unwind, but is also a top destination choice for fishing and recreational tourism. The fun starts on the waters of Wisconsin’s deepest natural inland lake, which has more than 27 miles of shoreline. Add incredible scenery and area resort offerings to the mix, and it’s easy to see why Green Lake has been a top tourism destination for over a century.

Things to do in Green Lake

Fishing is perhaps one of Green Lake’s most time-honored traditions. Whatever the season, plenty of fish -- and fishermen -- congregate to the lake. From bluegill, perch and white bass in the summer to lake trout, pike and walleye in the winter, fishers can reel in real winners all year round. Water adventures are practically unlimited in Green Lake, whether visitors prefer high-adrenaline sports or leisurely bobbing on the water. Among the options are jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding, to name a few. Board a speedboat, pontoon boat, or sailboat at one of Green Lake’s seven public launch sites, and enjoy the thrill of a ride across the water. If you prefer land to lakes, admire the natural landscape of the region on one of the many public hiking trails. The Hammers Trail traverses 5 bridges over springs and creeks, while Norwegian Bay Boardwalk winds through the largest area of contiguous wetlands to the lake’s shore. In other sports, Wisconsin’s best golf destination is located on the grounds of Green Lake Conference Center. With its rolling fairways and huge elevated greens, it’s consistently ranked in the top 50 golf courses in the country. For arts and entertainment, Thrasher Opera House is a top notch venue for live performances. The historically restored space features quality acts from music and theater to opera and dance. The Deacon Mills Park is awash with tunes in the summer as well. Each Wednesday, Deacon Mills hosts Green Lake’s Concerts in the Park, showcasing a wide range of musical styles. Downtown Green Lake is also a must see, with each shop full of delicacies and treasures waiting to be explored.

Day trips from Green Lake

Visit one of the Amish communities of Wisconsin located in southern Green Lake and Marquette counties. The settlements are Old Order Amish, who don’t use tractors or telephones, but specialize in products that reflect their heritage such as woodworking, cheese making and baking. The greater Green Lake County is also bursting with local history, entertainment, activities and opportunities galore. Plan a trip away from Green Lake to the Fox River, where visitors can go camping right on the bank. Learn about local history in Ripon and Markesan, or browse the antique shops of Water Street in Princeton. For a day trip that takes you farther from shore and across the state border, head to Chicago, Illinois, one of the largest cities in the United States. Be amazed by the city’s bold architecture, and take in the glorious skyline as it lights up for the evening. Spend the day traversing the museums, or hitting other points of interest such as Navy Pier, Millennium Park or the Shedd Aquarium. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is another day trip option offering a plethora of sights. Situated on the shore of a different lake (Lake Michigan), Milwaukee is known for its breweries, museums and amazing views.
