About Brownsville

Located at the southernmost tip of Texas, near the Gulf of Mexico, Brownsville gives you a taste of southern life with a coastal vibe. The Mexican-American War ended in 1846 with a new national boundary at the Rio Grande River and the creation of Brownsville. This is shown in Brownsville’s architecture with the combination of Mexican-Spanish Colonial with the formal and folk building architecture. Things to do in Brownsville

As you walk Brownsville’s Heritage Trail, enjoy the diverse neighborhoods that contribute to Brownsville’s character: the residential neighborhood at St. Charles Street, the Market Square area, the County Courthouse area, the City Cemetery near the Depot and the former Fort Brownsville Military Reservation. Sombrero Festival was founded in Brownsville in 1986. The festival is held in Washington Park in downtown Brownsville the last weekend of February each year during the annual Charro Days festivities. The festival is a family friendly event catering to multiple generations with food, music, and events and rides for kids. Charro Days, Brownsville’s seven days bi-national festival. Born to lift community spirits during difficult times, the Charro Days Fiesta arrives celebrates cultural appreciation from across the border. Get off the ground and enjoy the view of South Padre and Brownsville from the air. The family owned business, Island Biplanes, will fly you over miles of Texas and ocean. Feel the wind through your hair in the open cockpit.

Day trips from Brownsville

While in Brownsville drive east on Route 4 for about 20 miles to Boca Chica Beach where you will see miles of wetlands and sand dunes before reach the Gulf of Mexico. The beach offers a wide, white sand where you can camp, fish, surf or sunbathe. Cross the border into Mexico to Matamoros, Tamaulipas where you enjoy authentic Mexican food, and mingle with the locals. Be careful crossing the border in other cities along the Texas border as it is especially dangerous. While along the coast, visit the Point Isabel Lighthouse, which was built in 1852, to protect and guide ships through Brazos Santiago Pass and the barrier islands. The Lighthouse was opened as a State Park in 1952 and remains the only lighthouse on the Texas Gulf coast open to the public. The Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage which is on the grounds of the Lighthouse, is open to the public.
