Hot Springs Information

About Hot Springs

Welcome to the Southern Gateway of the Black Hills, where you’ll find majestic hillsides, abundant attractions, and a thriving small town atmosphere that makes for a perfect family vacation experience. The South Dakota town was founded in the late 1800s by early Pioneer Settlers, and prior to that, had been a spot that both the Cheyenne and Sioux Indian tribes fought to attain control over. The area is well known for having "healing" warm waters that have turned it into a popular destination for wealthy folks seeking the ultimate spa slash wellness getaway. Experience relaxation and pure bliss along with miles of flat land and tall grass. Warm waters and warm people await.

Things to Do in Hot Springs

After checking into your choice of over several hundred lodging options, explore this hot southern town by strolling along the Freedom Trail that winds its way along the banks of the Fall River. Not only will you find healing warm-water springs, but you’ll also get the chance to walk under some waterfalls and to encounter a deer or two along the way. Make sure to return from your adventuring to experience the unique variety of shops, galleries, book stores, coffee houses, restaurants, and lounges within the downtown area. All are housed inside magnificent century-old sandstone buildings that gorgeously dot a stunning landscape along Chicago, Jennings and North River streets. If you’re having trouble deciding where to start, head towards the 1890 Railroad Depot that now serves as Visitor Information Center to get some friendly directions. Maybe try checking out the Mammoth Site, or see some wild mustangs in their natural habitat gallop freely over the open range at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. Play a round of golf at the award-winning Southern Hills Municipal Golf Course before cooling down for a long swim at Evans Plunge. There’s also Wind Cave National Park, as well as the annual Miss South Dakota pageant to look forward to. Get ready to savor healing waters, soothing spas, and natural warmth in one of the warmest places in South Dakota.

Hot Springs Day Trips

The city, as mentioned, was founded as a frontier health spa to capitalize on the array of springs containing warm mineral waters that rise and fall in Fall River Canyon. Take a day exploring the entire town, which is set inside a sandstone canyon and is full of classic turn-of-the-century-style sandstone buildings. The Fall River winds through the historic downtown area and leads towards six other major thermal springs that emerge from the ground to converge into a single canyon, so in Hot Springs, it really is all about the water-- the biggest spring stays warm at 87 degrees and flows continuously up through the gravel bottom of Evans Plunge! It even goes so far as to recharging the water in the huge indoor water park seven times a day before then overflowing back into Fall River. What’s more is that just down the stream a little ways away in the downtown district, you can also join locals on their daily journeys to fill up their domestic water containers at Kidney Springs. It’s the best type of H20 to be found for anything from drinking and cooking, to washing and bathing. The water flows out of the rock canyon wall and into a basin at the Kidney Springs Gazebo, a Victorian trellis topped with a statue called "The Gift of Water." Swim, splash, soak, and savor some warm mineral waters today.

Hot Springs Accommodations

From hotels and motels, to charming inns and guest lodges, you’ll find a variety of accommodation options in town. Try out Historic Log Cabin Motel, a peaceful, clean, themed historic cabin offering spectacular views, or experience camping at Allen Ranch, where you can do river tubing, cook evening steaks inside a cowboy cook shack, and hike trails along the Seven Sisters Mountain Range. There’s also Hills Inn, which provides luxury on a budget, as well as FlatIron Historic Sandstone Inn to choose from.

Hot Springs Transportation

Nestled in a pine clad valley in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota, the city welcomes visitors and new neighbors with a warm smile. There are tons of monumental man-made and naturally-formed travel conveniences to be found, which is evident in the array of world-class hiking, biking, motorized, and non-motorized trail offerings in town. Whether you’re looking to hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, do some ATVing, or even snowmobiling, there is an uncrowded nature-infused surrounding of over 450 miles spread across 75 different trails to relish in. You might even want to hop on a tour via the Bison Express, which offers a nice way to experience wildlife viewings and to see spots such as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the State Game Lodge, Custer State Park, Wildlife Loop, and Mount Coolidge.
