Greer Information
About Greer
Located in the picturesque foothills of the Upstate region of South Carolina, Greer is the perfect combination of small-town charm and big-city opportunities. With a distinguished past serving as a hunting ground for local Cherokees to settlement by pioneering families in the 1700s to the advent of the railroad in the 1800s, Greer has a rich culture and history just begging to be explored. Greer was founded by a man named James Manning Greer, whose ancestry traces from Scotland through Ireland. Many of his descendents still reside in the area. Prior to the American Revolutionary War, the area was known as part of the "Domain of the Cherokees," and in 1777 the area was added to the state of South Carolina. In 1873, when the Richmond and Danville Air Line Railway was built between Atlanta and Charlotte, a train station was built named Greer's Station. A hundred years later, the name of the town was officially changed to the City of Greer.
