Things to do in Klamath Falls

Are you an avid bird-watcher? If so, Klamath Falls has a surprise in store for you. Every February on President’s Day Weekend, Klamath Falls hosts the annual Winter Wings Festival, the oldest birding festival in the U.S. This four-day event opens on Thursday morning with field trips, and continues through the weekend with workshops, speakers, displays, and free activities for the whole family. You’ll get a chance to see more than 350 different bird species, so make sure you check this festival out. Outdoor activities are one of the highlights of visiting Klamath Falls. Check out Lake Eauna and its nature trail where you might see Osprey, Yellow-headed Blackbird, and Bald Eagle, among other birds and wildlife. The nature trail is conveniently located within walking distance from downtown Klamath Falls. There are a handful of lakes in the nearby areas that are perfect for fishing. Upper Klamath Lake is home to rainbow trout and German Browns and Sturgeon; Lake of the Woods has Salmon, Yellow Perch, and different types of trout; and Miller Lake is where you can find Kokanee Salmon and trout. In addition, these lakes all offer great views, so pack a picnic, bring a good book, and enjoy lounging by the water. Biking is big in Klamath Falls, and whether you’re a fan of road or mountain, there are plenty of trails and routes for you to explore. For road bikers, start with the easy, Lake of the Woods loop around the lake. Move into a more moderate route with the 61-mile Merrill Loop, which loosely follows the base of the Stukel Mountain. There are plenty of difficult rides, as well, so be sure to bring enough food and water if you’re attempting any of these rides. Mountain bikers can ride an easy trail on the 9-mile High Lakes Trail or take a more difficult ride on the Rye Spur Trail at the south end of Four Mile Lake.

Day Trips from Klamath Falls

Head north of Klamath Falls for about an hour and reach Crater Lake National Park, an excellent spot for an outdoor day trip. This park features the only zip line tree-to-tree canopy Forest Service Land, and it also happens to be the longest zip line in the state of Oregon. The zip line tour offers nine different zips, two sky bridges, and two rappels, so be sure to check it all out. While you’re in the park, head to Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the U.S at a maximum depth of 1,949 feet. Its crystal blue waters are a huge attraction for visitors, as are the more than 170,000 acres of old growth forest that make up the park. Check out the geological formations, many of which were brought about by the eruption of Mount Mazama nearly 7,700 years ago. This national park is not one to miss, and is easily accessible from Klamath Falls.
