Muskogee Information

About Muskogee

Muskogee is a city in Oklahoma, roughly 50 miles southeast of Tulsa and 140 miles east of Oklahoma City. Even with a small-town population of fewer than 40,000 residents, it’s one of the largest cities in the state of Oklahoma. Whether you’re passing through town or vacationing in Muskogee, you’ll likely find it a charming and friendly place. Home to liberal arts school Bacone College and a Northeastern State University satellite campus, Muskogee has a youthful population; over 60% of residents are under the age of 45. The city was named after the Muscogee language, spoken by Creek and Seminole people in east central Oklahoma. In pop culture, you might know Muskogee best as the subject of Merle Haggard’s tune “Okie from Muskogee.” Three small films were shot in town – Jim Thorpe from 1951; Salvation, made in 2007, and Denizen, a film from 2010. The city recently won awards for its food festival (the Soul Food Cook-Off), water activities, and historic preservation.

You can camp overnight before returning to Muskogee, or make it a day trip in a quick 40-minute round trip drive. Tulsa is one of Oklahoma’s greatest locales for American arts and culture. The perfect American tourism experience is just a 45-minute drive out of town: The Blue Whale, located on historic Route 66. One of America’s greatest roadside attractions, the giant whale statue was built as an anniversary gift for the creator’s wife, who loved whale figurines, but it soon became a tourist attraction complete with a beach, swimming hole and picnic area. The park was restored after the creator’s death and has since been featured in several TV shows.
