In the warmer months, visitors flock to the water and enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, and exploring the two nearby state parks. In the winter, the lake freezes, providing visitors a great space to go ice fishing or snowmobiling. The 21-mile long lake boasts 55 miles of shoreline and an average depth of 22 feet. Oneida Lake offers ample space for everyone to enjoy their favorite activities.

Things to do in Oneida Lake

Don’t have your own boat? Not a problem, as you can easily rent one from Boat Oneida, Charley’s Boat Livery, or Angler’s Bay Marina. While you’re there, you can also pick up a kayak, paddle board, or jet ski to cruise around the water. In the summer, the lake is a great place for these activities, so consider renting some water equipment and joining in on the fun. Fishing is another popular activity to do on the lake. Oneida Lake is known as the “Walleye Lake of New York State” due to its large walleye population, but it also boasts bass, white perch, bullhead, and many other types of fish. Head to areas like Big Bay or Cleveland Bar for the best fishing spots in the summer. In the winter, Big Bay is considered one of the best ice fishing spots, as well. Kids and adults alike will love Sylvan Beach Amusement Park. This uniquely vintage park features classic roller coasters, bumper boats, arcade games, and a giant slide that requires riders to hop in a burlap sack to make it down. Adults will appreciate the sense of nostalgia the park conjures up, while the rides and games will keep the kids entertained for hours. The park is located on the easternmost shores of Oneida Lake and offers visitors public beach access so you won’t miss out on any lake time. Every year, the park opens on Memorial Day weekend by throwing a big luau party, so if you’re visiting during then, be sure to check it out! Winter months see visitors come to the lake for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and hunting in the state parks. Verona Beach State Park and Stone Barn State Forest are two great places for hunting and fishing. Snowmobiling on Oneida Lake is a popular activity, as the lake freezes over and there are many park trails that allow for it, too. Rent a snowmobile and head out to the open land for a fun time in the winter powder.
