Brooklyn is one of the boroughs of New York City, known for its popping neighborhoods and cutting-edge culture. It’s home to familiar neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights, as well as timeless attractions like Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge. This “it” borough has a culture of its own, built around the young professionals who swooped in and restored the “mecca for immigrants,” as it was known in the early 1900s. Some say Brooklyn is a state of mind, which may be because the borough used to be a city in its own right. Now, this “Borough of Homes and Churches,” is all about the hipster, the eclectic, and diversified culture as reflected in the numerous neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York.

Simply touring the neighborhoods of Brooklyn will give you ample things to do. Downtown Brooklyn is a central shopping a business area with department stores, businesses and federal buildings. Brooklyn Heights, the most expensive neighborhood in Brooklyn and even parts of Manhattan, is full of elegant brownstones and historic churches to explore. Park Slope is a beautiful neighborhood that’s home to Prospect Park, where you can ice skate in the winter and fly kites in the summer. Williamsburg has the most trendy music clubs, galleries and restaurants. The Prospect Heights neighborhood has the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and Brooklyn Public Library. If you can make it out to Coney Island, don’t forget to ride the Cyclone, a 1927 roller coaster that’s the most famous ride of the amusement park. If you’re looking for diversity, Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood has been called New York City’s Puerto Rico and Brooklyn’s Chinatown. It’s where you can find diverse cuisines in the restaurants and local markets around town.

A day trip from Brooklyn could mean spending a day in another borough, or traveling to entirely different cities in the vicinity. There are plenty of things to see and do in New York City, like catching a Broadway show, spending the day museum hopping, or hitting up all the famous tourist attractions in the city. All it takes for a day trip around the Big Apple is a trusty map and a list of places you want to visit. Thinking big and famous, like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Museum of Natural History and Times Square will put you on the same page as hordes of other like-minded tourists. Brooklyn is also home to a number of bed and breakfasts that are absolutely quaint. Some even have extra perks like a yoga studio or the feeling you’ve just stepped back into the Victorian era. If you want to stay in the middle of all the action, then Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg or Park Slope are your best bets. If you want to stay in an upscale neighborhood, then Brooklyn Heights will have you feeling like royalty. If you prefer a quieter, residential area, then Midwood or Borough Park are neighborhoods to consider. Some areas to be avoided for their crime rates and other concerns are Red Hook, Bushwick and Crown Heights.

The legendary public transportation system of New York will get you to any of the other four boroughs and around Brooklyn itself. There are around 18 or so subway lines that travel into Brooklyn, some of which provide direct routes to Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. Because there are so many routes and stops, it’s advisable to get a map or use the subway trip planner that is available online or via mobile apps. There are also buses that service Brooklyn. The MTA has an extensive network throughout the borough, many of which start and end near Borough Hall in Downtown Brooklyn. The Long Island Rail Road is also another form of transport, and is accessible from the Atlantic Terminal at the Atlantic Avenue subway Station. There are shared-ride airport shuttle services for travellers going to NYC airports, and Concrete Connect has regularly scheduled departures from the Atlantic Terminal to JFK International Airport. There are also numerous taxis and ride-hailing programs throughout the borough, and many people walk or ride bicycles as well.
