Things to do in Mesilla
Mesilla definitely has a lot of interesting and fun things to offer visitors. One of the most important things to do is to visit the historic Old Mesilla Village. Old Mesilla is famous for being where Billy the Kid stood trial. The plaza of Old Mesilla has local boutiques that offer crafts from local artisans as well as numerous restaurants serving authentic New Mexican cuisine. There are great sites throughout Old Mesilla like the San Albino Church and it’s definitely a must-visit. In nearby Las Cruces, every Wednesday and Saturday, the city holds the Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market with lots of fresh produce from local farmers and handcrafted goods from local artists. Mesilla is a great place for natural desert adventure as well. The Dona Ana Mountains, Robledo Mountains, Picacho Peak, Tortugas Mountains and Dripping Springs are all located within 10 miles of Mesilla and are great for beautiful scenic views and great adventure. At the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, you can get a view into New Mexico's 3,000 years of agricultural history, which is interesting for the whole family. The Museum of Natural History is another exciting place to visit. The museum is small, but showcases a few rotating exhibits as well as a small zoo of fauna from the surrounding deserts and a native plant garden that are very unique and interesting for all visitors. Another outing is the White Sands Missile Range where you can visit the museum as well as climb and sled down the beautiful white sand dunes on the site. The missile park showcases more than 50 missiles and rockets and is a good place to learn about American history.
Day trips from Mesilla
There are all kinds of great day trips you can take from Mesilla, especially to great state and national park areas. The City of Rocks State Park City that has many large sculptured rock formations in the shape of pinnacles or boulders that can rise as high as 40-feet and is a lot of fun to explore. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Mesilla. About an hour drive from Mesilla is another great state park in Elephant Butte State Park. It’s New Mexico’s largest state park located on a large man-made lake where visitors can enjoy fishing, boating and watersports as well as camping. For another great adventure, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a bit further, about a 2-hour 45-minute drive from Mesilla. It’s located in the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico and is home to 119 known caves and you can explore the caverns as well as desert wildlife and cactuses.
