Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan and it has a great location on the west side of the state in close proximity to Lake Michigan and beautiful towns along the coast that are perfect to visit in the summertime. Grand Rapids is known for its great art scene and historical monuments and buildings as well as minor league sports teams.

Things To Do In Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is the cultural arts epicenter in the state of Michigan and it hosts Art Prize every year and in 2016 it falls September 21-October 9. Art Prize is the world’s largest art competition and artists at any kind of level can enter to compete in the competition and it’s the best time to visit Grand Rapids because the streets are full of people enjoying the art created by artists and the city is basically transformed and it’s really fun to see. The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is one of Grand Rapids’ top attractions. You could spend an entire day enjoying all that it has to offer with the natural trails and boardwalk, as well as the world class outdoor sculpture park that includes “Leonardo’s Horse,” a finished sculpture based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s planned masterpiece. There are indoor areas as well that have special sculpture exhibitions and you can see the largest tropical conservatory in the state of Michigan and see interesting arid and carnivorous plants. The gardens host concerts in the warm months with their outdoor amphitheater as well. Grand Rapids is also home to the Grand Rapids Art Museum, which hosts collections dating back to the Renaissance all the way up to modern art. Visit the Gerald R. Ford Museum to learn more about the only president never elected to serve after he took over for Richard Nixon. Ford is originally from Michigan and his final resting place is also in Grand Rapids just north of the museum. Experience the Grand Rapids Public Museum, which is great fun for all ages and features great exhibits on history, science and culture. The museum also has a great planetarium. If you’re interesting in sports, Grand Rapids has the minor league hockey affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, the Griffins, which play at Van Andel Arena as well as the single-A baseball affiliate of the Detroit Tigers in the West Michigan White Caps, who play at Comstock Park.

There are great day trips to take when visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan. The city’s location in West Michigan means that it is in close proximity to charming towns located on Lake Michigan with stunning beaches. You could take short, 30-minute day trips to beautiful towns like Holland and Grand Haven, which are stunning in the summer months. Holland has the Holland State Park, which is a beautiful beachfront to Lake Michigan and is very popular in the summer months. Grand Haven also has its own state park on Lake Michigan and a charming downtown area. A bit of a longer trip from Grand Rapids, but absolutely worth the 2.5-hour drive is a trip to Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes outside of Traverse City, Michigan. The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are a stunning natural wonder and definitely the most beautiful place in the state and one of the most beautiful places in America. The sand dunes stretch up to 450-feet above Lake Michigan and are a lot of fun for all ages to climb and explore and they also offer stunning, scenic views of Lake Michigan.
